Well, it happened, my 60GXP drive started doing the grind deal that signifies that it is near the end of its life cycle. I'm just hoping it dies soon so I can go ahead and RMA it and get a new one to sell so I can afford a Western Digital. First and last IBM drive I'll buy. I knew there were problems with th 75GXP line, and apparently they carried over to the 60GXP line. I'm PO'd.

Western Digital has it's fair share of failures too...

I've had one western digital drive outta the 4 I've gotten (it was a 40 gigger) that died.

3.2 gig 5200RPM drive
40 gig 7200RPM drive (died)
40 gig 7200RPM drive (replacement)
60 gig 7200RPM drive

When they do work, they work damn nice. I have no complaints about them at all.

Look on the bright side; at least it didn't start bumping AND grinding.

Perhaps everyone should stay away from 40GB hard drives?

I bought a 30GB & 75GB 75GXP over a year ago and they've never given me a problem. Both drives have absolutely no bad sectors, which is a sign to watch for on these IBM drives.

A mere 6 hours after I hooked up my 60gb 60GXP, I wake up to a clicking and Kernel Errors. I thought this is such crap...but its soo weird. My motherboard couldnt detect the drive at all after that. I unplugged it, planning to call Newegg to have them ship me a new one, since I had a doa. I hooked up a 4 gig Fugitsu to load a temporary OS, and it wouldnt detect right at all....2 gig, 6 gig ect. I hooked it up (the 60gb) like 3 days later to see if I could retrieve any of my 8 gigs of mp3's, to find that it now works flawlessly. Been up for about a week and a half, flashed the bios, and havent had one problem. What should I do? RMA the mobo, drive, or both?

I have had 3 Western Digital drives fail on me.

850 meg RMAed
6.4 gb RMAed
20 gb RMAed

The first two I think were due to the fact that my old apartment had a crappy flow of power coming to it. The 20 gb died in a month after getting it. My Samsung and my IBM are working fine.

My HDD grinded a while back. It's still running fine (If a tad slow). Grinding doesn't mean the end, it's like.....hmmm...ooh doughnuts. :D
