My 5770 kicks my CRT out of scan range

From time to time. I've had this CRT for many years and never seen it before I put this box together the other week. It's a Sun GDM-5410 21" trinitron, the card is a XFX 5770 running whatever came off ATI's site for drivers as of two or three weeks ago.

It got hung up in windows (7) and I ended up having to boot it with the monitor unplugged, then plug in monitor, install VNC, reboot, and use VNC to access it while it had the monitor out of range. I corrected the settings and all has been well in windows.

I think there is a hardware problem because it does the exact same thing trying to boot Linux, any of three flavors I've tried.

I suspect it is an DDC/EDID problem, but don't know that there is anything to be done about it.

Thoughts?

Powerstrip is the only thing that I know can truly fix this. I don't know if it works on Linux or not. You might get some luck on the Linux forums entering custom parameters into the driver.

It absolutely blows my mind that ATi hasn't included at least half of that functionality in their drivers. Most of my builds for friends include ATi cards for their price/performance. But I stick with Nvidia strictly because it pisses me off having to run a third party program to do simple things like telling your monitor what resolution you want it to run at.

I've had resolution trouble with ATI stuff going way back, but never too high, just too low. Like stuck at 60hz, I can handle that. Same problem just different?

I suppose I can find a way to tell Linux on boot what freq to use, annoying though. Someone could recommend me a gforce alternative to this card too. 🙂

I'm sure you won't need to switch to Nvidia to get it to work. Might just need a little love finding the solution.
