As you might have guessed from the thread title, my modem is a slug. 'Twas not always so--I used to connect at about 33200. It's not line noise, as I have another computer on the same phone line with no problems. The problem manifested itself after I was fooling with some proxy software, I've forgotten which one, though (sorry...). I have a lucent winmodem(yes, I know they're crap...) with the newest driver version. I'm running windows 2000, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the modem too many times to count. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Does the connection actually seem slower, or are you just going by the numbers?

well, have you checked the connection properties to make sure it's set to connect at the fastest speed possible? Have you checked your modem's properties to make sure it's set that way? Have you tried removing the modem driver and reinstalling it?

Ensure that you also have a "clean" line..I can't remember the exact commands off the top of my head since I haven't played with a modem is close to 6 years..but there was a AT command like AT&Q or something which would allow yuo to get line signal quality information. Sometimes when you have a bad line you will get very lousy connection rates..Regards

I've checked the connection properties and modem properties over and over, everything is set properly, I've got the port speed at 115200. I've reinstalled the driver several times, also. I have not run a proper diagnostic on the phone line, but I am assuming that it is fine as my other computer connects at normal speeds.

Just a quick suggestion. Try turning your video accelerator down. The performance tab under advanced settings (Using Win98SE I'm assuming W2K is similiar. Forgive me for any errors;)) I know this works in some instances. Not sure if it will help you. Again, just a suggestion.

I've also heard that having the latest drivers is not ALWAYS the
best.
I installed my Lucent modem with the 5.65 CD drivers and connections
were terrible. I updated to the 5.75 drivers and now connect at
45k. I know there are later drivers but why fool with a good
thing.....Greg

Lucent Winmodems are NOT crap, first of all. They are extremely reliable and very inexpensive. As you said, the problem manifested after your proxy experiment, so that in and of itself suggests a software issue.

I'd try putting "AT&F" in the modem string box, and I would also go down a version or two for the drivers, as the latest drivers did not perform well for me in Win2K and all previous versions did.

Ok, I figured out the problem (I think). I was just setting up a new computer (well, new to me, anyway) with a clean install of win2k and I put my modem in there to see how it did...it still connected at 4800. So, I took the modem out of my other computer and put in the one I'd just clean-installed and I connected at 31000. I guess the modem is bad...strange that it would keep working at a slow speed instead of going out altogether...anyway, thanks for all your help!!
