I bought one of those new fangled Haswell G3258 Pentium cpus, but then I realized the passmark number is lower than my 6 year old i7 940.

Intel Pentium G3258 @ 3.20GHz - 4000
Intel Core i7 940 @ 2.93GHz - 5431

WTH Intel? What's up with that?

Gee, I dunno. 2 threads versus 8 threads? Intel's single-threaded IPC advantage hasn't increased THAT much recently. Sure, it's better, but it's not 4x (400%) better. More like 50% better.

But you CAN overclock it, and there it shines. Makes it closer to 5500 than 4000.

so i saw a deal for a dual core a6-7400k with mobo for $40 total after rebate.
I thought that would be a cheap upgrade to my quad core 960T.

then I saw the CPU Passmark scores:
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2392&cmp[]=369

AMD Phenom II X4 960T - 3,861
AMD A6-7400K APU - 2,972

this is real world applications/usage, not theoretical maxing out all cores?

What do you expect for $40? Step up to 760K, or even a A10-5800K and your 960T will be beaten. I know for a fact. I have a 960T that is stable at 4.1 GHz with all six cores enabled thru Advanced Clock Calibration and my 760K and A10-5800 both are a bit faster in real world usage by a fair margin.

I'd say get a used m4a89 gtd PRO for $50-$60 and unlock that Thuban. :D
An m4a79xtd evo is another option.

No way those wittle Kaveri chips are better than anything Deneb/Thuban.

760K single thread

http://hwbot.org/submission/2281810_skyline_king88_superpi___1m_phenom_ii_x4_960t_be_16sec_0ms

960T single thread

and it DEFINITELY (960t) is better in multithread.
960T is all-around better than newer AMD chips.
8350 would be OK..
