My 360 Drive crapped out this weekend.

I have a 360 elite and the drive started making a loud grinding noise this weekend when trying to read a disc. It would ultimately run the disc and I could play but whenever data needed to be pulled off the disc, the grinding sound would come back.

Tried this with a few game and dvds and got the sound everytime. Late Sunday night, it started saying Unplayable Disc.

Is this problem fairly common? Cause? I've heard of/read about disc issues and the Unplayable/Unreadable disc but not the grinding sound.

Anyway, called XBOX support and they're sending me the box to ship it to them.

Anything I should be aware of or do prior to shipping it out to them to avoid any hiccups?

It's nice they will replace it. That would be terrible if you had to buy a new one.

They send plenty of packaging junk. The only problem problem is finding a UPS drop off point close to you.

There's a magnet on the spindle thing that the disc spins on. It's supposed to attach to a spinning thingy on top of the drive enclosure. Apparently, some people have had the magnet come off, and stay stuck to the spinning thing on the roof of the enclosure. It causes the drive to make noises and the drive to just not work correctly. It's a simple fix, but if your 360 is still under warranty it's best sent to Microsoft, just letting you know what could be wrong.

I'm on my 3rd 360, last night I was about 2 hours into playing Blue Dragon and got the redness.

General indication of the beginning of the end, good thing my warranty runs til the end of this year at least. I'm still in awe that this is still such an issue for MS. I've had this one for 5 months.
