I have a release day Xbox 360 that has gone kaput. Regardless of what disc i put in, game or dvd, the dashboard shows "unplayable disc". Unfortunetly, since this isn't the "red rings of death" the extended MS warranty won't cover it.

SUcks.

Call and complain vehemently. Bring up the recent class-action lawsuit. They may fix it for free anyways.

Don't the 2005 360s have a lifetime warranty? I thought MS had admitted a manufacturing defect in the launch units caused an even higher failure rate than 2006-7 builds.

They said that, but you'll have a tough time getting them to do anything about it.

Worst case scenario is you can get a new drive off eBay for $65ish, but you have to do a bit of firmware moding.

I haven't heard anything about a lifetime warranty...just the three years for the red light thing.

And O.C.- I dont know anything about firmware modding for the 360...i would assume that they could lock you out of live for that, cant they?

I'd rant about it being the launch console that was such a problem that they extended the warranty just for it like Dave suggested. Also bring up the class-action lawsuit which indicates that the 'unplayable disc' error is fairly common.

Basically, play "Angry consumer that is always right". Won't guarantee that it will work but it is worth a shot.

You have nothing to lose by calling them and "acting" pissed, not that you don't have a reason to be pissed to begin with.

The firmware has some key in it that tethers the drive to the console, so you need to get that key from your old drive and write over the one in the new drive. As far as I know MS would have no idea you ever did it, but I've also never done this.

But I would save this for a last resort because you would obviously void your warranty.
