I payed top dollar for a 23db(A) Papst fan (92mm 3412NGL) to replace the cpu fan in my Dell Dimension PIII450 machine (a 92mm 34CFM 27dB(A) NMB fan, model 3610KL-04W-B20 housed in a plastic CPU shroud.) Problem is the Papst sounds louder than the NMB! There is an annoying mid-range hum coming from the papst overtop of the sound of the air pushing out-it gets louder and quieter at regular intervals (2 or 3 seconds.) Is this normal? Could I have wired it incorrectly? (I cut the wires on the old fan to use the power connector plug with the Papst.) I also replaced my 80mm PSU fan with a second papst, an 80mm 8412NGML that produces 19dB(A) at 26.5CFM and is obviously much more quiet than the 3412NGL, but I can hear a low vibrating sound at regular one second intervals. Any thoughts?
I'm a bit disappointed with the noise of my Papst fans after waiting such a long time for my order to come through and then paying the hefty C$80 bill. If I can't solve the noise problem, I just might put the old NMB back in. Or maybe I'll have to buy yet another fan with lower airflow (Dell puts a pretty big heatsink on the SLOT1 CPU, so I'm not sure how necessary it is to have that much air moving across it.)
Any ideas would sure be appreciated!
