my 2.2Ghz mbp's superdrive is worthless

long story short...

-bought 2.2Ghz mbp in september 2007 (matte ftw)
-working perfectly until april 2008, where the last half of the tracks on any audio cd i would burn would all have staticky/hissy noises, or will just flat out refuse to play
-took mbp to the apple store, got superdrive replaced (same manufacturer and firmware)
-was having no problems until last week (january 2009), where the same staticky issue is happening again
-took mbp to the apple store again, got superdrive replaced (completely diff manufacturer), and was even told by the genius that "if it happens again, we'll keep replacing it."
-to my amazement, the drive does the same staticky/hissy noises, but to a lesser effect.
-this time i call applecare on the phone, tell them my problem, the guy knew what i was talking about so he escalated me to "advanced hardware support". i chatted with that guy for a good half hour, but the end result was that i had already done whatever he was going to have me do (burn cd/dvd from itunes and finder, burn a disc in windows via boot camp, etc), so they would send me an overnight shipping box to put my mbp in and send it to them.
-on its way back as i speak. EDIT: arrived and still has the same issue

and its not like ive been sticking to one brand of media either. ive used "cheap" ones like great quality and khypermedia, to "good" brands like tdk, memorex, sony, etc.

this is the 3rd time that my superdrive has gotten replaced. this is, imo, ridiculous, as my macbook pro cant even do a simple task like burning a cd. the guy from adv hardware support said that if we cant fix it this time, you are getting a replacement. well whatever the replacement is, im sure it has that horrid superdrive (matshita or HT-ST-DL or whatever it is) and there is no other brand i could put in myself or anything...dammit.

cliffs:

-bought mbp in september 2007
-superdrive started effing up in april 2008, got it replaced via apple store
-superdrive started effing up AGAIN in early january 2008, got it replaced via apple store
-this 2nd replacement has similar problems, and now cant even read some discs that my previous drives (and other computers) were able to read.
-called applecare, got sent an overnight shipping box, sent it to them, getting it sent back with a "new" superdrive
-got mbp back (january 19th 2008) with the 3rd replaced superdrive from applecare, still has the same issue
-called applecare about it, said that ill be getting a call back, and never did
-pretty pissed off regardless if it has to go for another repair or not

unfreakingbelievable. it STILL is happening. im apparently supposed to get a phone call from tier 2 support at applecare to discuss what i should do next. 4th repair? thats just ridiculous.

thank guys. yeah, its absolutely irritating, and of course, i didnt get a phone call back from applecare, so im gonna try again later today. but even so, im still doubtful. i swear...if this goes back for a 4th replacement, they can freaking keep the laptop for all i care. im not dealing with this crap superdrive that cant burn audio cds.

kmax82 - a total replacement would be nice! 🙂 minus the glossy screen though...🙁

i have to admit though, apple has one of the best CS people around. they know how to deal with stuff like this and the times that ive called them, ive never had to be on hold for longer than a minute or two and that was during "peak times" according to what my rep told me.

Well, I've never had to take anything back for the same problem. But from other manufacturer's warranties state, and also from other Apple users.. if the same part breaks 3 times then they replace the whole machine. This is how the warranties work at Chevy, Ford, Toyota, etc... as well. So keep trying and see what happens.

I wonder if it has something to do with the controller on the motherboard?

Or something similar yeah. Maybe it's some pin on the mobo that is applying a voltage that is out of spec which slowly destroys the drive?

i was thinking the same thing. im willing to bet that the mobo is the cause of all this and i really want to investigate this myself, but i dont want to void the rest of my warranty by opening up the machine. 🙁

kmax82 - will do. i managed to get ahold of another "product specialist/tier 2" person and he said that if i dont get a call back around 1PM tomorrow by my original rep who started my case, he'll take over. i heard from him that the original rep had escalated my issue to the engineering department...whatever that means.

i will keep bumping this thread as necessary too.

of course...didnt get a call today from either rep. going to call them tomorrow, anddddd my superdrive still sucks. no surprise there.
