My 1st fried chip in 2 years !

A Pally XP1600+, A7V333 & SK-6.

Previously running a XP1900+, take it out to test a XP1600+. Put in the combo, power up & it got shut down in 2 seconds.

Check thru the HSF fan cable in the right header...power up again & same probs.

Clear the CMOS, power up...smell something burnt. Power off immediately.

10 mins later, take out the CPU...some burned marks (I think). Clean both CPU + bottom of the HSF. ASII, then put it in...no POST. But the CPU/HSF is still hot.

Possible tht a dead Pally still chunk out heat ?

Just a shot in the dark... Maybe the heatsink is not making contact with the die? I had a A7V333 half a year ago and same symptoms that you described happened to me. The computer would start but after several seconds the mb shut everything down. Asus overheating protection kicked in.

U r right ! I fixed tht Sk-6 reverse. Darn, been fixing many SK-6...just didn't think tht this its on the reverse !. 😱

Heck, the COP kick-in right...but might be too late to save tht CPU. On the surface of the CPU...strong burning smell.

I did put back the CPU to the mobo + HSF (on a correct side this time). Power up...no display & beep. The mobo power & fan stay on...forever. Touch the HSF...warm.

So anybody ?? Do a dead Pally still chunk out heat ? Or there is a slightest possibility tht my Pally still survive.

You may have destroyed some of the internals that cause it not to work, but there may still be some intact, or some shorted that draw current... I highly recommend you don't play with it anymore, as a short will draw more current and possibly fry your motherboard too.

Heck, probably the survival rate is nil. Thx for ur info. Now wht ? Well, a Duron 1.2Ghz might be on the way. Really on a tight budget these days. 🙁

Duron 1.2 + Coolermaster HSF for around $25.00. I thought it's a steal.
😀 . Together w/ A7V333, I could unlock it & crank up the FSB to...well 166 FSB. No ?
