A couple of weeks ago I was invited to dance at the Nebraska Governors Inaugural Ball (I do ballroom/latin/swing dancing for fun). Well that was last Friday and it was a blast. They had a military band playing and asked us to dance for 10 minutes (in 1940's military uniform for me and a USO girl costume for my wife). However we listened to the music and told them that we had to reduce the dancing to just 5 minutes since most of the music just doesn't fit under the ballroom category (what do you dance to the Star Spangled Banner or Yankee Doodle Dandy?). Anyways, as we were going on stage, the camera crew was blocking our enitre half of the stage in an attempt to get close-ups of the band. My wife kindly demanded "get off the stage were going to dance now" and we started to dance. That got their attention so they recorded our entire dance (2 foxtrots, a polka, a rumba, and 3 swings). There was a wall behind the stage with a large movie screen showing our every move. As I carried her off the stage, a reporter asked for our names. He said he got a good shot, but I figured with a dozen different performances with hundreds of performers they probably wouldn't do anything with our photo. Well the next morning, there was a 1/4 page photo of us on the the front page of our city's newspaper (top and center). Throughout that evening we couldn't go 1 minute without being stopped by someone complimenting us on the dance (or our outfits) asking us where we learned, etc.

Thanks to RossMAN for hosting this pic for a few weeks. Sadly the picture doesn't show us doing any interesting moves, but instead the photographer focussed more on the decorations in the arena.

My wife and I specifically learned the foxtrot, waltz and swing for our wedding. during the traditional husband wife dance, we handed the DJ a tape and whipped out a choreographed waltza and swing routine. It was pretty fun and 4 months of hard work paid off. I haven't danced since.

Sorry I was off at class for the last 3 hours. I emailed RossMANN a few minutes ago, but he may be busy.

It will be posted on RossWorx.com tonight because FTP is blocked from work.

I always envy people who know how to ballroom dance really well. I just can't do it for the life of me...

At my local ballroom there are often plenty of women sitting around waiting for someone to dance with them. I just don't understand why men are often afraid to do that. I mean having a dozen women wanting to have your attention and (if done properly in many dances) press their bodies up close to yours should be every man's dream. I think it is a lot of fun and have been hooked since I started about 1.5 years ago.
bah, wish i could dance!!
See my comments above. I'm sure Leeds has a few good places to dance. I bet there are tons of women waiting to teach you (but you may already be taken - if so, bring her along its a great date).

My wife has started to teach dance (which is how we got the invitation) and this is how she gets most of her business. Too bad you haven't kept it up.

Thanks, and sorry for misspelling your alias above.

It isn't a simple thing to do well. I've been taking group classes for 2 hours a week for a year and a half and I know I certainly have a long, long way to go. There are 8 levels that they teach at and I'm still working on level 2 and 3. I watch so many people take a couple of classes and enjoy it but stop without doing any dancing. You really need to go to a ballroom and practice at least twice a month or you lose everything. But honestly the basic steps generally are quite easy - anyone can do it. I've seen elderly couples who can barely get around with walkers/canes get out of their seats and do the most wonderfully smooth waltz. I've seen people who are clumsy at everything (my family, me included) able to do some great dancing.

Very nice. Wished I knew more dances that didnt require drinking to have some "good" moves.
