I just received the call while at school. Parents are at the hospital with her, apparently her heart is beating again and she is hooked up to a breathing apparatus, but they are afraid her heart will stop again. She is going to be transferred to another hospital, one more capable of treating her. This does not sound very good. . .
I do not understand how this can happen. She is perfectly healthy. WTF?
Perhaps her luck isn't as bad as I initially thought and she is lucky to be improving. . .but we shall see.
I'm not sure why I am posting this, I was stuck here in class for a bit and I feel alone. I guess I needed to vent somewhere other than my family who so far doesn't seem to be doing so well, and thanks to the internet you people can't see my composure falling apart.
I'm going to be leaving now. I hope I do not encounter anymore unfortunate surprises.
Update-12/11
Been a while, I thought I should update this thread since I have had a few requests.
I received a horrific phone call from my father while I was at school last Thursday and learned that my sister had a cardiac arrest while at school. My sister was running until she suddenly collapsed. Luckily, my sister was around people who were capable of helping her, and one of the PE teachers performed CPR while the paramedics were on their way. The paramedics started her heart again using a defibrillator, but my sister was not breathing and remained unconscious. I am unsure if during the ambulance ride the paramedics fed oxygen into my sister's lungs by some artificial means; my parents do not seem to want to go into the details of what occurred.
My sister briefly remained at the nearby hospital where she was kept alive by a breathing machine and remained in critical but stable condition. The doctors taking care of my sister did not know what was wrong with her and had her sent to a hospital in LA that was more capable of treating her. My ironically lucky sister got a helicopter ride to the LA hospital while the rest of us, me and my family, slogged through traffic.
One week later, still at the hospital, my sister seems to be in stable condition, but remains unconscious. My sister has, however, begun to breath again, a few days ago I believe, and they are removing the breathing machine today. Her heart has not had any problems, and she has begun to move her arms and legs.
The fear is the extent of the damage that occurred to my sister's brain during the time which her brain did not receive oxygen. I do not know how long her brain went without oxygen. Whatever occurred to her brain is the reason that she remains unconscious, and AFAIK, also the reason she had not been breathing. She has had an MRI scan but all I have been told by my parents is that the results are inconclusive.
I have also been told by my parents that doctors believe what occurred to my sister's heart was caused by a very rare defect, and that what happened to her on Thursday was inevitable. Ironically, I suppose my sister was lucky to be around people who were able to help her, and to be alive, but so very unlucky to have such a rare and inescapable problem in the first place.
And no, no pics.
