My 14 year-old sister's heart randomly stopped during track. . .

I just received the call while at school. Parents are at the hospital with her, apparently her heart is beating again and she is hooked up to a breathing apparatus, but they are afraid her heart will stop again. She is going to be transferred to another hospital, one more capable of treating her. This does not sound very good. . .

I do not understand how this can happen. She is perfectly healthy. WTF?

Perhaps her luck isn't as bad as I initially thought and she is lucky to be improving. . .but we shall see.

I'm not sure why I am posting this, I was stuck here in class for a bit and I feel alone. I guess I needed to vent somewhere other than my family who so far doesn't seem to be doing so well, and thanks to the internet you people can't see my composure falling apart.

I'm going to be leaving now. I hope I do not encounter anymore unfortunate surprises.

Update-12/11
Been a while, I thought I should update this thread since I have had a few requests.

I received a horrific phone call from my father while I was at school last Thursday and learned that my sister had a cardiac arrest while at school. My sister was running until she suddenly collapsed. Luckily, my sister was around people who were capable of helping her, and one of the PE teachers performed CPR while the paramedics were on their way. The paramedics started her heart again using a defibrillator, but my sister was not breathing and remained unconscious. I am unsure if during the ambulance ride the paramedics fed oxygen into my sister's lungs by some artificial means; my parents do not seem to want to go into the details of what occurred.

My sister briefly remained at the nearby hospital where she was kept alive by a breathing machine and remained in critical but stable condition. The doctors taking care of my sister did not know what was wrong with her and had her sent to a hospital in LA that was more capable of treating her. My ironically lucky sister got a helicopter ride to the LA hospital while the rest of us, me and my family, slogged through traffic.

One week later, still at the hospital, my sister seems to be in stable condition, but remains unconscious. My sister has, however, begun to breath again, a few days ago I believe, and they are removing the breathing machine today. Her heart has not had any problems, and she has begun to move her arms and legs.

The fear is the extent of the damage that occurred to my sister's brain during the time which her brain did not receive oxygen. I do not know how long her brain went without oxygen. Whatever occurred to her brain is the reason that she remains unconscious, and AFAIK, also the reason she had not been breathing. She has had an MRI scan but all I have been told by my parents is that the results are inconclusive.

I have also been told by my parents that doctors believe what occurred to my sister's heart was caused by a very rare defect, and that what happened to her on Thursday was inevitable. Ironically, I suppose my sister was lucky to be around people who were able to help her, and to be alive, but so very unlucky to have such a rare and inescapable problem in the first place.

And no, no pics. :p

Hope she's alright.

edit: This is weird so ask questions and get details. How long was she down?

Not to make light of the situation, but it sounds like an opener to an episode of House... and actually kind of like this past Tuesday's episode of House, except the woman (a fitness person) started out with lung problems .

 Stop posting.

In rare cases they do, as it happened to my friends mom a few weeks ago.

Best of luck to you and your family

Not as rare as you think, hearts stop randomly to the elderly almost everyday. :p

Wow, not only did you manage to make a truly awful pun, but you did it as insensitively as humanly possible. Well played you great bastard.

OP, go to the hospital. As a general rule, it's not a good sign if someone's heart stops, and it's definitely not good if a doctor says it could stop again. Go visit your sister. Best of luck.

"randomly" is doctor code for "we couldn't figure it out"

Get dr. house on it, he will try to find out what's wrong with her and while doing that he will insult you with clever jokes.

Are you sure the heart just stopped? Or did it just go into fibrillation. Completely different things.

Brings back bad memories of early this year. Wife's 13 year old niece was running a relay in PE class. Said she didn't feel good and was going to sit down. She laid down, and her heart stopped. They couldn't get it going steadily for 45 minutes, with predictable results. Very, very bad time.

I sincerely hope the OP's sister's heart was restarted quickly.

Her sports career is probably over. Hopefully there is no permanent damage though.
