My 1.6A has arrived, and I must say......

This is an amazing chip. I just built an 1800+ about 3 months ago and when I saw the oc'ing results people were getting with the A chips I decided to take the plunge. I ran it at 1.6 for probably 2 minutes at the most and went ahead and put the FSB at 133, it posted and booted into XP and ran for 3 days without a problem. This morning I moved the FSB up to 151 and bumped voltage to 1.625 and it has been running without a hitch not for the last 12 hours. This is my main machine that I use constantly all day long, my 1800 is my gaming machine so it's not used as much as this one. After I run at this speed for a while I'll see how much further I can take it.

System Specs
Intel 1.6A
Asus P4B266-C
256 Generic DDR PC2100
(2) WD 60 GB
Pioneer DVD 16x
LiteOn 20x CDRW
Geforce 256
SB Live 5.1
Win XP

Here's a screenshot for your pleasure.

What's your CPU temp @ 151fsb? What HSF do you have. I'm intrigued...these athlons (I've been using) are just too hot to overclock AND have a quiet system

Did you have to up the voltage on the 1.6 for 133fsb?? I got a 1.8a here running and I am half tempted to bump it up to 133.. but i'm a little leary....

Redly1: At 1.6Ghz it was running at a constant 40C, at 2.4 it's now running at 42C and it has been at the same temp since I posted the first message. And the real kicker to this whole deal is that I am still running the stock HSF with some AS2.

Lepperboy: I did not have to touch the voltage going from 100 to 133 FSB. When I went to 151 though I tried it at 1.6 VCore and it had scrambled video like the AGP wasn't happy. Bumped it up to 1.625 and it's been fine ever since.

If anyone was a little leary it was me :) But after reading quite a bit on the sucess of others I decided to try it just because it was a fairly inexpensive setup. I am very pleased with it so far and will continue to experiment with it.

WOOHOO!! thanks for the inspiration... I just got my 1.8a running at 2.4. all I had to do was up the cpu voltage to 1.7

lol i might be heading back over to the dark side... after four years of amd, i dunno, this northwood chip is so tempting.

i got a nforce setup right now, so i would have to pick up a new sound and video card... damnit........................

intel im coming!

and it seems AMD is locking their chips now, not sure what that's going to do for OCing ......going to hand it over to Intel on that one......bad move if you ask me, but oh well

yeah its unbelievable how well u can overclock intel nowadays

take my rigs for example...dual 1GHz at 1.105 GHz each...thats not the impresive part.

idle - 24*C
full - 38*C

intel stock cooling, 2 80mm fans on side of case blowing

yah go intel!! i want an amd buff in here to explain WHY they like amd

Alot of AMD users were able to get there 1.6 ghz (1900+) to overclock to 1.8 ghz which may not be as great as the P4 but the AMD was always cheaper than Intel although the gap isn't as great now. Most test reports showed that the P4 and XP were neck and neck even when overclocked.

I don't really like the heat and noise my amd system makes, its REALLY annoying,
and I might switch over to intel again(my cpu price point is ~$100, so the 1.6a is still a bit too high).
I think I spent over $50 on fans and other cooling stuff, but I did gain alot of knowledge.
However, I think the only reason we don't have pay $250 for 1.6a is because there is competition.

anyone know why when I have my 1.6a@2.28 when I boot into XP sometimes it would say that it has recovered from an error and that it had created a log. Is this gonna affect my system?

Well, this is the beginning of day 2 running at 2.4 with prime95 running, if it does fine through today, as I expect it will, I'll be bumping it up further tonight and see where it's going to be stable at. I'll keep you all updated.

My mobo is the p4b266. How do I set the memory bus ratio to 4:3? In the bios, I only have auto and 1:1 option.

I've had my 1.6A/P4S333 combo about a month now and I've been slowly tweaking it higher, started @133FSB default Vcore, week2@138FSB 1.525Vcore, week3 140FSB 1.55 Vcore, Currently@145FSB 1.625Vcore. All have been run to ensure complete stability for 1week before bumping higher. Tomorrow I'll try 150FSB and tweak the Vcore as needed. I'm using stock HS/F in a Maxtop case with 4 case fans and temps started out under load in mid 30'sC and are now mid 40'sC@1.625Vcore.

Same here :) only I was running AMD/Cyrix rigs for maybe 2.5/3 years before building this North(it gives me)wood rig. I still have several Duron rigs as well. Just a couple of months ago if you posted an Intel thread it soon died a lonely death, but now they're starting to dominate the CPU/mobo forums. I'm sure things will shift right back when T-Bred ships ;)

With motherboards like the Iwill XP333 and the upcoming KT400, a locked Thoroughbred won't matter. Looks like the first one is gonna be a 133MHz fsb one, with most newer boards easily running 166-200MHz it will be a northwood like overclock. With no info to back it up, I will guess the Thoroughbred will hit 2.5GHz+. After a few higher models are released the price should be reasonable. It's gonna take a Northwood overclocked to 3.5-4GHz to beat it. But for the price of the 1.6a, that is a very tempting deal right now....

2.5 GHz or more? Easy cowboy! :D Hitting 2.5 GHz with a northwood is already good and it has a longer pipeline thatn t-bred. Additionally, AMD seems has decided to have decided to leave out the heatspreader and that rumors say it's only 10% cooler than the Palomino despite the shrink. That would equate to a lot of heat in a very small area; I beleve MikeWarrior's estimate was 50% MORE heat per sq, mm than a Palo.

If I were you, I wouldn't count on too many T-Breds hitting 2.5 GHz or more with aircooling ;)

BTW, congrats on the nice OC jesta :)

OK, am currently running at 155 FSB still at 1.65 vcore. I tried at 156 at vcores up to 1.7 but could not get windows stable. I am pretty sure it is the ram I am using. I have read a couple times about some people using a 1.0.0.3 bios version but for the life of me I can't find it, if someone could point me in the right direction I would apprecieate it. I have some PC2700 coming in later this week so I will try that out and see what happens. So right now running at 2480 and going to start prime95 and see how it does.
