I built my neighbor a new computer and i put a 1.4 GHz Athlon into the ECS K7SEM motherboard. When I boot up it displays it is only an Athlon running at 1050 Mhz (100 x 10.5). What is wrong? They didn't ship me the wrong chip did they?

You need to set the FSB speed to 133 mhz (instead of the 100 that it is at). Then you will get 1.4 ghz

Set the multiplier to 12.5X and it will jump to 1400MHz.

There is no 1400MHz Thunderbird on the 133fsb.

Of course someone had to correct me before he tried it. :)

"There is no 1400MHz Thunderbird on the 133fsb."

Yes there is, it's 133 x 10.5. Newegg has them for $115.

Of course there is a 133 fsb version, why do you think the multilpier is locked at 10.5.

I set it and this is how it looks:

Main Processor : AMD Athlon(tm) 1.400C Ghz (133x10.5)

Is that how it should be and I'm ok?

I gotta go to work now, If it's broke i'll fix it later.

10.5 at 133fsb only comes up to 1396MHz. He wants a 1400MHz Thunderbird.

Ok...

Bus Speeds 101:
Not all bus speeds are integer numbers.

A 133 mhz FSB is really 133.333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333 mhz
66 mhz FSB is really 66.66666666666666666666666666666666666666666666
33 mhz FSB is really 33.333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333

when you take 10.5x133.33333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333

You get a number really close to 1400 mhz.

And yes dparker, that is correct.

I did some hunting around and called ECS, AMD, and few computer experts and I was able to come up with this answer:

<<

<< You need to set the FSB speed to 133 mhz (instead of the 100 that it is at). Then you will get 1.4 ghz >>

>>

Hope this helps. :D
