MX518 or Razer Plasma Edition

Which one would you pick the MX518 or Razer Plasma Edition for gaming and why? Also, whats a good mouse pad to go with the mouse? Thanks

The MX518 is basically the same as the MX510, with the cruise control buttons replaced by resolution changing buttons.

Once you get to these price/quality levels, the quality difference isn't noticeable. Personally I have the MX510, and gladly reccomend the MX510/MX518.

I think thermaltake and flexiglow both make decent mouse pads. Depends whether your more interested in good looks or (fractionally) less friction.

Hmm I thought the 518 stepped up resolution the 1600 to compare directly with the Razer Diamondback. Is that not correct friend?

I am curious as I would like to get a new mouse myself and honestly I much prefer the looks of the 510 vs the 518 and on the on the fly res shifting is honestly worthless to me as I have never used it, even when I had a mouse such as the Boomslang.

Thanks up front.

How do you achieve 1600dpi when the usb driver only scans around at 200?

I had to run a doubler on my 510 to get it to 400dpi.

Open paint select the spray can and swirl around and notice if you have gaps in the spray. Since the mouse doubler I no longer have that. Precision has been greatly increased.

I have used both, and I personally prefer the razer. The logitech is fat and cumbersome for me, where the razer is lithe.

I also prefer the 20 some odd on the fly settings.

MX518. Razers have no ergonomics whatsoever. They just have speeds that no human on this Earth can achieve, making that level of technology useless. Even with the MX518, no human can fully optimize its speed.

mx510 is almost the same as the 518.
518 has 1600dpi whereas the 510 only has 800 (afaik)

go with the 510 for gaming. The 518 has been known to have issues with the switching dpi on the fly when the user didn't want it to (some cs players I know have complained about that). I roll on the 510 and so doesn't my buddy and he plays CS like it's his job (former CAL-P) and loves it. Make sure you get a good mousepad with it too. The icemat are pretty sexy and you get a smooth ride on them.

in the past I haven't liked the razor mice. They never were able to preform the way that I wanted them to, and I love this mx510.

Not true, I've used a mx510, I own a Diamondback Plasma, You can tell a difference, maybe a lot of the power is wasted because you can't take full advantage of it. But, The Razer is so much smoother. When I had an mx510, I used it right out the box, noticing it was a bit more accurate, that was all. Got the Razer, took me 4 days to get use to how much more accurate/fast it was. It was like I wasn't using a mouse that's how different it was. Incredible seeing I've NEVER had to get use to a mouse since the first one I owned with my win 3.1 box 🙂

These mice are absolutly the best, I swore by the Boomslangs, never used a Viper, but the Diamondbacks are the cream of the crop. Once you get use to the shape and the sensitivy it's hands down the best mouse on the market.

I highly doubt ms paint uses Direct Input. It proablly uses the windows message WM_MOUSEMOVE which is far slower than DirectX.

The MX518 and Razer Diamonback use the same image sensor (made by Agilent). The only differences between the two are ergonomics, buttons, and software. They should be nearly identical when it comes to DPI, tracking performance, etc.

Also, you can ALWAYS use more DPI. If its too fast, lower the sensitivity in your game. Lowering sensitivity is better than lowering DPI because lowering DPI is effectively lowering your resolution. Thus, if you have an MX518, leave it at 1600 DPI and remap the +/- buttons to keyboard keys which then can be bound to game functions. They are more useful that way.

Lol, the Razor's are just rebadged Logitech Mousemans with a different optical sensor. Not exactly a "proprietary" design, which is why they look like crap. They are basically $2 Logitech mice.

I hacked my USB polling speed so it would poll the mouse twice as fast. Works great but might not be compatible with some USB devices. Which I actually have not had a problem with.

But this explains that.
http://hardware.gamespot.com/Story-ST-16167-1699-28-30-x
Recently, users have taken to hacking their USB ports to increase the polling rate of USB ports to 250Hz and even 500Hz in an attempt to rid themselves of negative acceleration. This technique does result in some success but the faster polling speeds also sacrifice system compatibility with many other USB devices. According to Logitech, increasing USB frequencies can tax the CPU an extra 5 to 10 percent.

We're generally leery of thumb buttons, but the MX 518 Gaming-Grade Mouse has a usable button implementation.

Instead of eating up precious CPU cycles and destroying compatibility with other USB devices, Logitech opted to widen the data path. By using a 16-bit data path and the standard 125Hz transmission rate, Logitech's MX 518 Gaming-Grade Mouse can transmit a change in position of 32,000 pixels at each polling interval, solving the problem of negative acceleration without increasing the polling rate.

i havent tried the razer but i own a mx518 and i got to say that it is very confortable compared to the normal mouse i had.....

my friend owns a mx500 and its identical to the mx510 except for the color..and i got to say that the mx500 is very heavy compared to the mx518(106g)..you can feel the difference between a basic mouse and the mx500 in terms of weight but you cant tell it when compared to a mx518

Care to back this up? I think youre full of it myself. Ive got one and its a major improvement over my 510.

Uh...dpi is different from the refresh rate.

If you want your mx510/518 lighter there is a hack for removing the weight inside. Just google it. Does anyone know where to buy teflon tape localy for the mouse feet?

i don't think the G5, G7, mx610 won't be out for a while...if you can wait, the G5 looks to be the best among the 3, if you can't, i would suggest getting the mx518/510.

btw, when you hacked your polling rate, if there's a problem with other usb devices, is it possible to just restore the default polling rates and the problem with the usb devices would be gone, or would it be like damaged.

I was going to make my own POST, but i'll use this one...

I'm dodging between the MX518 and the Raptor Gaming mouse...

The mouse I get has to have adjustable DPI, cause that's just swank...

Anyone have a suggestion as to what I should get?
Or should I really wait for G5?
