MX510 to G5?

I love my MX510 but am considering going with a G5 since I can get one fairly cheap. But not sure if the on the fly speed settings and weights are worth it? Is there more to it?

Go to a store and feel the mouse. That is what will ultimately make or break any mouse, as far as I'm concerned. My wife hates the texture of the mouse, but I don't mind it at all. I love the mouse. Changing the speed is useful for programs like Photoshop, when you need to move just one pixel up. So it's definitely been worth it to me...

The G5 is absolutly amazing when I'm playing games. Unless you plan to play fps, I don't know if the on the fly sensitivity is worth it.

I went from an MX500 to an MX518 and leave the mouse on 800dpi 😱 Even though I play a lot of FPS games I rarely change the dpi (you don;t need to have the Logitech software installed either) and I didn't like the texture of the G5. The mouse weight seemed like a gimmick.

The weights are nice, but I prefer really heavy mice. Some people might like it lighter, maybe a balance. You get to customize!

I have the G7, and I've tried the G5. I've also owned an MX1000 and various other mice.

The G5 does seem to have a rougher surface on it than the G7. I prefer the smooth surface of the G7, but I could live with either. The G5 is nice in the fact that you can swap out the weights to really get the feel you like. It's ESPECIALLY nice if you're switching from a super-heavy mouse like the MX1000. However, with all the advances in cordless technology, I really don't see the point in getting a corded mouse anymore, unless you're running a cordless phone, many cellphones, microwave, or radar jammer right next to your mousepad. 😛

I never really thought the extra DPI would do much for me, but I noticed a huge improvement from my last mouse (MX1000) as soon as I switched to the G7. Usually, switching mice will cause me to go into an adjustment period, when my gaming performance just... sucks. Once I get used to the weight, smoothness, etc. things go back to normal. With the G7, despite the switch from a heavier mouse to lighter, and different button configurations, I instantly noticed an improvement in my accuracy in BF2, CS:S, and even just clicking buttons or targets in WoW. I was floored to say the least. The only real use I've found for the DPI adjustment buttons are when sniping in FPS games - especially BF2. Zooming in with the scope and trying to hit that speck-of-a-person on a rooftop across the map is a lot easier if you can move your crosshair pixel by pixel, which lower DPI definately helps with.

Don't cheap out on a mousepad for either of these. They have very smooth, slick pads on the bottom that work best if you have a mousepad to couple with them. If you're using some generic junk, go out and look for something decent. Spend $20+ if you have to. I bought some light-up Thermaltake job from Radioshack for about $25. It's a lot more than I ever planned on spending, but it's been great to me. The surface is just rough enough for my taste, but most importantly, the pad doesn't move around on the desk at all.

Overall, I say go for it. If you're sold on wired, get the G5. Otherwise, give the G7 a try. Yes, the batteries DO die fast; however, you have two of them. By the time one dies, my other is charged and ready to be used. I've never been disappointed.

It depends on what you like. I went to circut city one day in search of a mouse after my mx1000 broke (RIP). But yeah, I felt the g5, and it was like a blob in my hand, It felt HUGE. I was used to the mx1000, so then I tried the mx revolution, and it was heaven. It felt like a part of my hand rather than a mouse. The thumb placment is deep in the mouse and it rests on the mouse as well. I spend nearly 100 bucks on a mouse that day, but its worth it. But Its all whatever you are used to. Deff bring yourself to some store to test out the mice and see what you like.

oh yeah, I totally forgot about how big this mouse is to most people. My old mice were way too small for my hand and my best friend had the G5 and recommended that I get one. It fits better than any other mouse I've ever felt, it's still a little on the small side for my hand though, but it'll do. My scores in bf2 have gone up since I got a better mouse too. You do need to try out these mice in person, I tried out the G5 before I bought it, but no other mice. I tried a few others including the MX revolution on Friday over at compusa, but I must say that I like the G5 the most of the mice that logitech makes.

I have a Mx310 just because it was cheap as well as a cordless mouse and it is to small for my hand and my hand hurts after abit playing with it.

well hold your thumb over the mouse sensor hole and move around the cursor by sliding your thumb around. hehehe
i just notice my mx1000(laser) can pull this off withotu any trouble but my mx700(led) mouse cannot. so the sensor is different

I had my mx510 replaced and while it was being RMAed I went to Compusa and bought a G5 to try it out. I didn't care for the weight-changing abilities and I didn't like the texture of the mouse either. Logitech replaced my mx510 with a mx518 and I liked it much more, so I returned the G5.

hows the 518 compare to the G5?

The MX-518 has the same feel as the MX-510 so it's not a big chance it just basically has higher dpi. The top part feels smooth and glossy it has the same two buttons on the side as the MX-500. The G5 has a werd texture on top only one side button 🙁 higher dpi but not by much and it's laser instead of optical.
