MX500 Problems (again)

I recently bought the MX500 and am still having problems getting it to work correctly in games. As pretty much every knows the scroll does not work in games with the Logitech MouseWare drivers. I tried the Tweak UI trick to get the wheel working in games and now the wheel does work...but if I do it that way, UT2K3 doesn't recognize buttons 4 and 7 correctly (the buttons in front of and behind the wheel). It recognizes them as WheelUp and WheelDown even though I have them set to PageUp and PageDown in MouseWare. This is totally worthless to me. I want to be able to use those buttons separately from the scroll wheel since they have no use in games otherwise.

If re-enable the wheel in MouseWare UT2K3 does recognize buttons 4 and 7 as PageUp and PageDown, but the wheel no longer works. If I uninstall MouseWare and use the XP drivers I can no longer use the thumb buttons or the buttons in front of and behind the wheel. Only the typical left, right, and middle buttons work, along with the wheel.

So has anyone had any luck getting the wheel and all the buttons to work in games?

Uninstall the Logitech software... but be sure to contact them and tell them to get their act together with their drivers. They will point you to a reg patch. Some folks are having luck, others aren't.

Install the latest MS 4.1 software and all should be well.

You will only be able to use 5 buttons and the scroll wheel, but it's worth it if you get better tracking in games with the same number of buttons as a MS Explorer.

Well after hearing this, I think I will just get the wireless Intellimouse Explorer instead of the MX700. I haven't completely made up my mind, but I don't want to have buggy mouse software.

Hi, I've got a MX500 Logitech mouse and I also had problems with the scoll function (in my case with NWN). I solved the problem not by uninstalling Mouseware but by setting the scroller options on "Use MS office compatible scroll only" (still using universal scroll) somewhere in the Mouseware options. I first tried updating my Mouseware from 9.7 to 9.73, but that didnt do anything.

Great mouse imho (my first optical mouse :) )

If you use the Microsoft mouse drivers for your MX mouse you are only going to get 400dpi instead of the logitechs 800dpi. You can enable it with a reg hack supposedly but i wouldnt bother buying a logitech MX mouse until they get their act together software wise.

I'm actually looking for a new optical mouse myself and thought the mx300 was for me but with the problem mapping buttons in games and then not getting 800dpi (even though you get at least the microsoft mouse capabilitys, and it will be fixed in the future eventually), I'm probably going to stick with trusty old microsoft.

Ok - I went to that link and found the download section. However, MS asks you your particular mouse model - which one would be best to download for use with the MX500?

Thanks!

Addition: Oh - I saw on another thread that you recommend the Intellimouse Explorer. I'll try that.

This has to do with the way the game supports the buttons, and NOT the mouse software. Most games you are NOT going to be able to use all the buttons on this mouse. BTW- I have the MX500.

you should be able to use all the buttons in games, most use directx which would allow theoretically any amount of buttons on any directx compatible device. like 13 axis' on your joystick and 20 buttons on your gamepad.. unless the game doesnt comply to how a modern game is programmed it should recognize anything windows does.

maybe thats it...windows doesnt natively recognize all the buttons so therefore the games don't either cuz they go off of what windows sees? from what i can gather.. logitech is enabling the extra buttons without windows being as involved as it is with their own mice..

an analogy would be a TWAIN compliant scanner versus a non-TWAIN compliant scanner, which uses third party software to enable its usage and features.

my aiptek pocket dv is that way, it only works with the software it came with (not listed in scanners and cameras but still in device manager and still works with its software but u can't use just any scan software with it.

about ppl having problems with the scroll..i was reading a review and saw this from EnvyNews:

Update: Several of our readers (Thanks to: w1zard & kalis) have pointed out that there is a work-around for the Wheel not working correctly in games. On the Logitech site, there is a well-hidden link that I didn't see that allows you to download a small patch titled 'GAME_WHL.EXE' which weighs all of 29KB. Grab it here!

In Logitech's words: This allows gamers to use a Logitech wheel/roller mouse without having to disable or end task on EM_EXEC.EXE, when playing games such as Rogue Spear and Quake. This Registry file also allows MouseWare to set both "Scroll Bar" and "Office Compatible" wheel options at the same time. This eliminates the need to check and uncheck the "Office Compatible" check box under the "Buttons" tab of the MouseWare properties dialogue.

I just selected the Intellimouse Explorer 3.0.

However, just tried their new software 0975... still doesn't work. Scroll button (scroll works fine) and two side buttons don't work in the damn game. Y'know at this point, this is the second logitech mouse I've owned and they still can't get their damn drivers right. One would assume that they might get something right since input devices has been the core thrust of their business for how long now? 10 years?

I like the mouse etc... but I refuse to support a company that can't get things right.

I also don't think that using the MS software should impact things as most of it is determined at the hardware (mouse FW) level. The difference you see in games, etc... is the acceleration which is set more aggressively with Logitech's drivers.

Reply from Logitech regarding 0975

Thank you for using Logitech's Electronic Technical Support. My name is Liz. The following information addresses your original question. You may wish to print this out and/or save this on your computer.

We have found that the Logitech assignments in MouseWare are not generally accepted in games. Therefor we no longer provide MouseWare functionality, (button assignments) when you are playing a game, (em_exec is disabled), then we fully re-enable it when you go back to non-gaming applications. This is done by detecting which components are used by the application. The main components we look for are Direct Input and OpenGL, which should cover about 80% of the games. Please note that only 5 buttons on the MX700 or MX500 can be used in games. Buttons 6, 7, and 8, can not be programmed. Look for added support on these buttons in MouseWare 9.80 (Due to the nature of software development a date is not available).

I'm assuming that the above mentioned patch will work, but it is only for 9x/NT. I just bought the MX500 and it works just fine in all my games, but I am running XP.

Is there a definitive way to make the 5 buttons work in XP?

yes...use ms intellipoint...after trying all tweaks, i've given up on mouseware for now. u'll lose the functionality on the quickswitch button...and the cruise control buttons now control scroll and are mapped as mouse up/dwn

I just ordered an MX700 and it should be here in a few days. Currently I have the MS Intellimouse Explorer. I am not interested in the other features such as the cruise control. All I want are the replacement buttoms for my Explorer like Left, right click, scroll with click, back, foward buttons on side. The others I don't need. So should I not bother installing the Logitech software and just use the MS one, or should I keep both?

I have an MX 500 I haven't tried it in games yet still waiting for my new Nforce 2 MB since I will have to reformat my HD, but does anyone know how to fix the scrowl wheel, in the settings I set it to normal but it always goes back to slow. The only way I can get it to stay at normal is to uninstall the software and reinstall it. Any way I can fix this????

mrman3k,
i used to get that too when i used mouseware....it used to happen when i changed the button properties for button 6 (i.e scroll wheel)...just change the number of lines to scroll in the button tab...its located in the lower half of the window
