After installation, the card was fine and sound was coming out fine. However, I rebooted and then the sound didn't work anymore. I moved the card over to another PCI slot and then the sound was fine again. After another reboot, the sound wasn't working once again. What is causing this problem??????????????

I fixed that problem easy...I got rid of my Vortex 2 card and got a Live! for Win2k ;)

Nice constructive suggestion, NFS4 :disgust: and extremely useful if we all have your extensive resources at our disposal! As for the rest of us, we sometimes strive to make what we have work, since it may be the best we can afford.
Have you checked the "usual suspects"? IRQ conflicts, (some sound cards don't like to share, just like some people) the latest drivers (two of my Diamond sound cards wouldn't work at all with the supplied CD, but worked fine with the latest Aureal reference drivers)and lastly, any patches available on the microsoft web site for Win 2K? Unfortunately, I am no expert with Win 2K, (or anything else, for that matter) but, if there is an answer, there is probably someone here at Anandtech that will happily share it with you. Good Luck,
Chuck

Have you tried downloading the latest Win2k drivers from Aureals website? I remember having to go through a page of instruction listed on their site to even get the drivers installed (which included renaming the driver.cab file, and having to delete and rename files in the Win32 directory).
