MX 510 vs 518

So at Futureshop here in Canada they are having a sale on mice. The MX510 is $25 for the red one, and $40 for the MX518, both prices are in Canadian and there is free shipping. So preformance and pride wise is there enough of a difference to justify the extra cost?

All's I knows is I LOVE my mx510. I don't think you can go wrong either way.... all I can tell you is that I would not hesitate to purchase another mx510 if it was mouse shopping time again.

I am kinda curious about this as well. Everyone has opinions on which is better but what about facts? What is the thechnological difference?

Only difference other than the color, is that the 510 is only 800-dpi resolution, whlie the 518 can adjust to 400, 800, or 1600-dpi resolutions.

I just upgraded to 518 from 500 and the differance is oooh WOW! Holy **** I cannot believe it hit that target! May be I should keep quiet on this little secet that give me an edge when playing games. As long as you are a bad shot with your 510 then I do not have to worry about coming in second place.

I had a 518, but sold it and got a 510. I never used the on the fly thing and I found the 510 to be just right. But thats me. You might be able to utilize that
feature. But still the 510 is a great mouse still.

I've had both. I like the MX518. The motion is smoother. Though I do admit I don't use the speed-changing buttons a whole lot now, I probably will someday.

I have both. The only difference is the color, and that the 518 enables you to press a button to switch between 3 preset sensitivities, while the 510 has a static sensitivity. Now, it is only worth the extra money if you play games a lot and you would seriously benifit from being able to switch sensitivities. I play a ton of games, and I use the sensitivity changer thing, however, I could live without it, its not a HUGE advantage.

Up to you really. If you want to save money, the 510 is still a great mouse.

Is the sale not on the site? As soon as I read it was at Future Shop, I went to Futureshop.ca, but the MX518 is not on sale according to the web store.. Local promo only?

If you would use the adjustable resolution, then get the MX518. But if you would never use it, then get the MX510, so you can have the scroll buttons.

The MX518 was surprisingly a huge upgrade from the old MX500 if that helps! Ive never used a 510.

I'm a "pro gamer" (mainly Q3 CPMA) and I can tell you that if you're getting a new mouse, get the MX518. It's really flawless. To be honest, the MX510 is not really inferior since the sheer precision doesn't really improve going from 800 to 1600 dpi. Still, if you get your sensitivity settings right, there might be a subtle difference.

As for G5, except for the rougher surface which is IMO better, I don't like it too much. The scroll wheel is just plain bad compared to MX's, it lacks one thumb button which I got used to, plus the laser sensor is more picky in terms of mousepads. The difference between 1600 and 2000 dpi in real world use (including games) is purely academic anyway.

I purchased a 510 not too long ago from Amazon - it's the first mouse I would trade my MS Explorer for! 2 side buttons, NO tilt wheel, plug & play - great mouse! Sensitivity wise it is fine for me, not worth $15 to double that to go with the 518.

To be honest you really only need one thumb button in games.

I agree with you on the scroll wheel though, it's just too hard compared to the MXs.
