MX 420 Overclocking/Temp

I got a MX 420 from a friend as a temporary video card to use on my system. I want to overclock it. I downloaded the coolbits reg hack so I can overclock, but can anyone tell me how to find out my temps to make sure it is not getting too hot? Also what would be too hot? Also what is best to test my overclock with? I am just increasing the core by 5MHz and planning on testing it in something and keep increasing it until I see something is wrong with the stress testing. What should I use to stress test? Then should I do the same for memory frequency?

Thanks

Anyway to know the temps of my card though? To make sure it is not too high. Also what exactly would be too high?

Also can I use 3Dmark 05? ON majorgeeks it says "NOTE: You MUST have a DirectX 9 compatible graphics adapter with support for Pixel Shader 2.0 or later, or this software will not work."

Is the MX420 DirectX compatible and have support for Pixel Shader 2.0? If not just download 03?

push it till it fries :) who cares bout the temp-if it's too hot u'll see artifacts so back off, otherwise i wouldn't worry if it smokes if it aint artifacting..it's hardly even an entry level gaming kard & how long do u plan 2 use it 4...?

I am not planning on using it for long. Is it alright to oc the memory? There is no cooling on the memory at all.

Stock it was 250/333 and now it is at 305/333. Any higher of a clock speed I notice artifacts in 3dmark 2001SE

should b fine...like i said u will see artifacts & it will most likely hang before u physically damage nething in the short term- and in your case who cares bout the long term :)

I seem 2 recall pushing the mem up as well made quite a difference on my old mx440...

good luck- can u post ur 3dmark03 scores 2 the diff settings u run it? I'm just interested cos i've long since forgotten the sort of gains i got with my Palit mx440 :)

I think the best overclocker i've ever seen was my incredibly awful 9200 SE 128mb, it was only 64-bit, so even tho the core would go 'bout 50% higher than stock, and the mem bout 30-40% u didn't see a huge real world improvement (tho a huge improvement in aquamark!) ( i think-don't quote me on those figures-it started off clocked lo cos it was passively cooled)

Worse, it is only a DX7 card, as the MX line of GeForce 4s were GeForce 2 core designs that were upgrade to work with the crossbar memory controller (so they basically gave you around GF2 GTS performance, IIRC). The Ti models were the DX8 cards in the GeForce 4 line. A MX 420 would definitely not work with 3D Mark 2005, as it has to skip quite a few of the 3DM2001 tests (like nature) because it lacks the shader support.
