The thing that puts me off MW is the thought of mashing thru mindless hordes 10yards away ala Serious Sam in single player. Are there any modern war games that doesn't keep pushing the action and has a slower more deliberate pace?

Operation Flashpoint: Red River. It's not as realistic and challenging as ArmA II, but it's far more tactical and paced than Call of Duty. Try it out.

No, man up and play the game as it is.

I don't think it's an issue of being able to "man up and play", the problem is that Cawa Dooty's singleplayer campaign is - more or less - an uninteresting shooting gallery with little to no variation or depth. If those aren't his tastes, then so be it.

Planetside 2 is something to look forward to if you don't mind futuristic(not quite Halo futuristic though), which you probably do since you said modern, but for the most part the guns still fire bullets.

I think there were some other games that were similar to Mechwarrior, but I haven't played any of them. There is a new Mechwarrior game coming out soon, although I don't have much faith in it being any good.

There are three due out soon(tm):

Mechwarrior Online (F2P MMO mech piloting)
Mechwarrior Tactics (F2P MMO turn-based strategy)
Mechwarrior Tactical Command (iOS game)

Why would you recommend RR over Dragon Rising? RR is widely considered a pile of dung.

OP, go with Dragon Rising. It's about on par with the original Ghost Recon games of old as far as pacing and real-world tactics go, but with a MUCH larger world, vehicles, and more open-ended.
On the 'slightly-more-arcadey-but-not-laughably-bad' like MW, there's the Rainbow Six Vegas games, as well as Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 (don't bother with the original). Very enjoyable, nothing compared to their original counterparts, but still involve a ton more strategy/tactics than any MW game.

Of course, the 800lb gorilla in the room is ArmA II (and, as an essential expansion, Operation Arrowhead). I've said many times on here, it's far from perfect, but there are simply no other games in anything close to this genre that are as ambitious and creative as ArmA. The level of freedom, detail, and realism is astounding. Pack a few mods and user created co-op missions on a good server or with a friend, and you're set for a very long time.

Yes, if you are ok with the WWII era and relatively linear gameplay, BoA is awesome! Actually, the original BoA is what convinced me to finally upgrade to a DVD drive, since it did not have a CD release.
Earned in Blood is still the best of the series, but all 3 real entries are excellent.

BoA is really the only game that does suppressing fire and flanking tactics in fire fights properly, you can try and shoot your way through the game like a regular FPS and you'll mostly be torn to pieces.

It's definitely a slower and more methodical type of game, the focus is on tactics and not necessarily how good your aim is or how fast you are, encounters require thought and usually end up in long exchanges of gunfire from cover while you work out how to nail the enemies.

I played the earlier Rainbow 6 series (not Vegas) and it was ok but had the opposite problem of MW - it was too fiddly, too much mucking about trying to set things up and the enemies had near perfect accuracy (remember the headshots?) so progress was slow with many retries.
Thanks for the tip on OF-Dragon Rising, R6 Vegas, Ghost Recon W2.

The Vegas games are much more arcadey than the original rainbow 6 games.
