Many of you prob have already seen me state that I am a big linux user. But I am going back to college and converted my lovely Debian Box over to a horrific Vista Box. LOL JK.. its not bad. I am very used to having multiple desktops though and its always been one of the most compelling features that kept me using Linux. Does anyone know of any application that can allow me to have multiple desktops. Not talking about multiple monitors, I have a 20" and 19" both right now that is getting upgraded to 24"s this spring. But something that I can add to the taskbar (preferably) or desktop that will change desktops for me. I am used to working with 4 to 6 desktops all at once when I am programming..

Thanks ahead of time..

EDIT:

Wow.. I found a wonderful program that works great and not resource hungry either. Best of all its GPL! Virtual Win

there was a power tool for xp that did that. downloadable from MS's site.
I have read about it, but it was a horrible implementation.

VW is working really good. I almost feel at home.. :D

i never used it, only heard about it.

for the most part, i kill every window i'm not actively using. browser sessions included.

since i rarely have more than 2-3 windows open at any given time, i cant find a need for multi-desktops. even in linux >_<

I've used both VirtuaWin and Dexpot. I liked Dexpot a bit more. Ultimately, though, none of the Windows implementations work nearly as well as either Linux's or Mac's.

I use the MS Virtual Desktop Manager at work (in XP) and it works well enough for me. How is its implementation "horrible"?

There was also released by Sysinternals, but it's not that great either. It only allows 4 desktops and each is a complete separate instance of Explorer because of the way Windows handles desktops so you can't move windows between them.

Visually Dexpot is awesome. Only reason I rather run VW atm is cuz I got dual screen monitors (20" and 19") and it only shows the main one with Dexpot. But think VW may have issues with Win7 from what I have read on their website, has anyone else had any issue with it under Win7?

At my last job we had GoScreen, talk about a horrible implementation.

I'm sure Stardock has something like that.

Or if you have an ATI card, ATI hydravision is free and adds the most useful features of the unix desktop.

MSVDM does only allow 4 desktops, but the rest of that isn't accurate. There's an option for shared desktops that allows you to move windows between the different desktops. And it definately doesn't run 4 instances of explorer.

I'm not talking about MSVDM, I'm talking about this from Sysinternals.

Hydravision? I have a Radeon 4850HD, I will have to check that out. Thanks.

http://ati.amd.com/products/hydravision/index.html

Hydravision is a hidden gem of ati exclusivity. Almost worth as much as physx, 3d vision, nvidia's gimping of games to only work properly on their hardware, and nvidia's superior linux support combined.

Breadth - increase your desktop work space by using up to two monitors
Depth - create multiple layers of desktop workspace with Multi-Desk

Determine the behavior of pop-up windows and dialog boxes in different applications
Switch between desktops with a mouse click or "Hot Key"
Vary your settings from one application to the next
Customize the features of Hydravision™ to an application

Transparent windows and menus
"Always-on-Top"
Multi-Desk properties
Cycle through desktops view
Move To Monitor
Internet Explorer extension

I was having fits trying to get it to work correctly last night. It kept complaining I didnt have a ATI video driver installed, which is crazy becuase I have the latest Cat9.11. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

EDIT:
I think it helps when I actually download the "VISTA" version.

EDIT2:
I played around with it, but the Vista version to offer limited options. For example letting you use your mouse to change desktops, but not letting you configure your mouse settings. Over all its a poor implementation on Vista.

I'm so happy that I noticed your edit. That program is absolutely wonderful. I'm going to try it on my netbook and primary machine with Windows 7. If it works as well on those machines, I'm donating.

Absolutely wonderful program. And I haven't even messed with any of the settings or explored it's features.

The biggest strong point of this program is that it is not graphics intensive. It does one thing and that is switch desktops. Which makes it more compatible across the board. It has tons of features just for switching desktops and moving windows. I give it a 4.5 out of 5.0.
