Hello agn. Now that ive narrowed my chip dwn(thx to all that helped w\ that) Im dwn to my mobo choice. Ive got it dwn to 3 choices. If you could offer your advice on these 3 choices which is the best 1. One side question: I want a mobo that can handle 2 voice apllications running at the same time. ie>> Unreal tournament & Roger Wilco. I see some brds offer AC\97 and some don't. To run 2 voice apps at once do I need AC\97 to do so..or does AC\97 not have anything to do w\ that? If it doesnt how can I tell what brd will be able to perform that task? The sndcrd I will be installing will be a SndBlaster live Platinum. Thx for all your advice...It will be apprecited once agn. 8-]

First of all, please just reply to your original post.

Next, if you are going to install an SBLive Platinum, you'll have more than enough sound card to run RW and UT. The onboard sound will have nothing to do with it, in short, you don't need onboard sound. Personally, I like the Asus CUSL2, although either of the other boards should do you right. I have had better experience with Asus as far as stability and returning things, etc., than the other two companies, but again, all of the boards should do you right. So it comes down to price. And those sound a little bit high to me... those are a little bit high. Here, go here and type in the manufacturer and model into the search box and hit enter:

Pricewatch or here:
CNET Shopper or here:
IBuyer

You should be able to save a little money this way. You might want to check out the pricewatch option that lets you package a motherboard with a specific processor, that's in the index thing. Good luck.

I vote for Asus.
Gigabyte makes a good solid board, but nothing to stand out in a crowd. ABit makes nice boards, but their RAM/Tech support and Quality Control is the sh!ts..if you get a board that works they are nice...but it's not worth the risk to me.
Asus makes good performing, stable boards, they have all the features, and they have a much better track record and RMA/Tech support should you need it. There are always some that have bad experiences with any type of board, but I know guys that run a local small retailer, and they have far more returns on ABit's than on Asus. Just general quality the Asus wins, and I'd choose it.

AC97 has to do with built in sound if you are using a PCI sound card you can ignore whether or not the board has AC97 as you won't be using it.

The SBLive! can handle up to 32 wave channels (default is 4, you can set 1-32). 1 for UT, 1 for RW, 1 for MP3s, and you can still have ICQ beeps.
And that's at the rather low default.

I would remove that Abit and add this:

MicroStar 815E Pro S370 ATX 1AGP/6PCI/1CNR/4DIMM ATA100 and Audio - $112(beats the hell out of those three choices you listed huh?

MSI makes great boards, this one is no exception. Anandtech has the confidence to put MSI boards in to their servers which hosts this very forum we're posting on right now. IMHO, this is by far the best choice for all i815E motherboards.

The CUSL2 is a classy board, a couple of friends have them and are very happy. I only know of one person with a SE6, he said he is having stability problems and wishes he had bought the CUSL2.

Re: Abit. Their stability has been improving. My VH6 is very stable. I think now we have to look at Abit board on their individual merits and accept that a number of the newer Abit mobos are as stable as any out there.

It doesnt matter, as stable as they become MSI and Asus will still topple them. There is no reason to consider the SE6, it doesnt offer as many features, it doesnt have 1MHz increment, and it's not stable. MSI 815E Pro is the board you want to get.

I concur with dc.

I recently purchased an Abit SE-6, and I'll be exchanging it for a CUSL-2 tomorrow.

Why not exchange for the MicroStar 815E Pro(if available)?

MY Msi 6337 is the best mainboard I have ever owned. Why does everybody love the Asus cul2 and never consider the Msi 6337 as a choice with the 815e chipset.

Re: my earlier post. I wasn't suggesting that the SE6 was a good option. Merely noting that Abit have been making better boards again lately.

(addition to my earlier post)

Ah yes how could I forget the MSi i815E Pro. MSi has been putting together some damn nice boards, Anandtech's HTTP servers run off MSi K7T Pros, and THe K7T Master makes me salivate :p

I've never used an MSi board before personally, but MSi makes high quality boards and with that kind of price it's hard to go far wrong.
If there boards are stable enough for Anand to use in his servers and it's $112, that's tough to complain about.

Asus CUSL2 or MSi i815E Pro.

Hey LXi. I looked for the MicroStar 815E Pro S370 on pricewatch.com and mwave.com. Mwave only had 1 815e pro but it only went up to a 800+ chip. I am going to put in a p3 933. Pricewatch had several brds listed but they were $132 to 138 plus freight. Where can I ck out the $112 price you listed, and what is the exact model # for it? I guess Im dwn to the ASUS & MSI brd, I like the Gigabyte brd. It's not getting many bad votes, but it's also not getting many #1 or #2 votes either.lol If I can get the MSI for $112 I'll probably go w\ it. Seems everyone love the ASUS. Yet I think the MSI might be the underdog brd that might have as much punch for the buck. Whichever I decide, I figure if the brd sux then I'll pull the brd out,buy the other, install the 1st brd into a system I'll build for someone & sell it. Thx alot. Thx to all that posted replies!!! 3-)
