Mustang Tranny Problems

I tried a car forum but no ones paying attention....

Ok, ive got a '94 Mustang v6/auto and ive been having some problems with the transmission (i believe). For a while (couple years) its always had a little trouble at the shift point into overdrive. If im driving right at the point where it would normally shift sometimes it would shift back and forth a couple of times. But lately its gotten worse. Now when im driving sometimes it will start shifting up and down the gears all over the place, and it goes on for a lot longer than before. But then sometimes ill drive for a long time and it wont give me any trouble at all. I cant really seem to find any correlation to whether or not the tranny is warm or not. Im gonna have my mechanic look at it sometime, but id still like to see what you guys think. Thanks for your help.

The fix I can think of is find the missing 2 cylinders

Naw, he usually waits for a non related post to throw around his mustang ownership badge.

Your transmission sounds brux, mabey a computer problem, get it checked out.

Oh yea, never heard that one. I would if i had money, someday i will. But i got this one real cheap and my dad wouldnt help me on the price if it was a v8.

Ok, in all seriousness, check the distributor cap and rotor inside. If it's worn then it won't provide enough spark to the cylinders. I used to have a Probe and it when accelerating up to highway speeds, it would up and down shift repeatedly for no reason. Replaced the cap and rotor and the problem went away.

Why not just put it in drive, instead of overdrive? Ain't really a fix, but it's cheap! Uh, this only happens at about 40MPH or so, right? If so, throw it back into overdrive when you are going to be staying above that speed.

Not any more, happens all over the rpm range, in all gears pretty much.

  • Improper fluid level.
  • Fluid contamination.
  • Filter damaged or plugged.
  • Main control assembly gaskets damaged or bolt out of torque.
