AHHHH!!!! Being the moron that I am, I installed Litestep, thinking how cool it would be to customize windows. Being an even bigger moron, I took the wrong steps in installing a custom skin, and now I can't see anything on my desktop. The only time I can run any programs is by going into send files in AIM (which begins at startup) and right clicking and choose open. What I need to know now is how to restore windows back to the way it was. I'm lost, I don't have a clue what to do. If anyone can look at the litestep help file and try to find how to restore, I'll umm.. give you something cool (DC- game, PC game, something like that). I tried reinstalling windows, no good. I'm running 2000 w/sp1. HELP!

Go into system.ini.

replace shell=litestep.exe with shell=Explorer.exe.

Anything else?

Removing LiteStep

There is really no reason why you should un install LiteStep (because it rocks!), but here is how you do it anyway:

If you are using:

Windows 95/98
Windows NT

Important Note

Just in case something goes wrong, you should have a reliable boot disk on hand. This is a very easy way to fix any LiteStep related problems you might have with LiteStep loading as your shell (if you are using Windows 95/98). Simply use the boot disk to boot to DOS, cd C:\windows and edit your system.ini there. If you don't know how to do any of this, then you might wish to reconsider using LiteStep. It is up to you, the user, to anticipate and intercept any problems you might have.

Windows 95/98

Method 1:

Open C:\Windows\System.ini with NotePad or any other text editor
You should see the following lines of text at the beginning of the file: file:
[boot]
(a bunch of stuff you shouldn't care about)
shell=C:\LiteStep\LiteStep.exe
Change the line shell=C:\LiteStep\LiteStep.exe to shell=Explorer.exe

Method 2:

Use one of many shell switching utilities, several of which are available directly from LiteStep.com .

Windows NT
If you installed LiteStep that affected:

Current User Only
All Users

Current User Only
Load the Registry Editor (RegEdit)
Go to the following key:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Remove the following value: Name:
Shell
Log out, and Log back in

All Users Note: You will need Administrator access privileges.

Load the Registry Editor (RegEdit)
Go to the following key:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon
Change the following value: Name:
Shell,
Original Value:
C:\LiteStep\LiteStep.exe
New Value:
Explorer.exe
Reboot the system for changes to take effect

To get explorer back temporarily for repairs, use the task manager to kill litestep.exe and startup explorer.exe.

What millenium said seems like the thing you have to do. Because it automatically runs litestep on start up so that's dumb i think.

You two could not fight your way out of a wet paper bag. I would kick both your butts, and send you home to mommy crying. ;)
