Berlusconi foils efforts to publicize party photos
Sun, 31 May 2009 04:53:53 GMT
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has won court order against publicizing embarrassing photos that have fueled accusations of his affair with a female model.
A civil prosecutor vetoed bids to expose 700 pictures of the 72-year-old premier's New Year's Eve party depicting him along with a number of women including, Noemi Letizia, an 18-year-old female model with whom Berlusconi is said to have an affair.
The Italian head of state maintains he is only an acquaintance of the Noemi 's parents.
The judge argued that granting permission would undermine the prime minister's right to privacy.
Italian media have revealed that dozens of young women attended the billionaire's Sardinian villa from where the pictures were shot.
The photos, shot with a long-range camera, show topless young women and scantily-clad girls with some in swimsuits.
Commenting on the latest development, the Italian premier called himself a "victim" of "insults" promoted by opposition to disgrace him ahead of European Parliament elections next weekend.
He has also announced that would resign in case the scandal is confirmed to be true.
However, Italy's newspapers, The Corriere della Sera and La Stampa published a letter demonstrating Berlusconi's demand from related authorities to stop the "use or publication" of the pictures.
The media-tycoon politician has been under fierce criticism to divulge information on his relationship with the teen model after his wife Lario Berlusconi filed for divorce, accusing the husband of being a womanizer.
Lario, Berlousconi's second wife also claimed that the PM 'frequented minors'.
