Getting my first smartphone today, the new HTC Pure from AT&T. This is going to be my first smartphone so I need to know if there is a 'must have' app list you Windows Mobile users need on a daily basis. I have read the reports that 6.5 absolutely sucks, but coming from a Samsung Eternity I can't really be a judge of the OS. A couple of quick questions though;

1) With capacity up to 32Gb of flash memory, if I were to encode a movie into divx format, I should be able to watch the movie on my phone, correct?

2) Will I be able to update my OS when a new one is released? Or do I have to do some sort of jailbreaking?

1. Yes, you will be able to watch your movie, but the included Windows Media Player probably won't be able to play it (when does WMP NOT suck?) You'll have to use something like CorePlayer.

2. Yes, you'll be able to update the OS and ROM. To update ROMs you have to unlock the phone.

a. download and apply the HARD-SPL: this unlocks the phone and makes it capable of installing new ROMs.
a. download and install the new ROM

The forums at PPCGeeks is the best there is.

As for software, I generally shoot for these:

1. Something that allows me to tether or share my phone's internet connection with another computer: wifi router apps, PDANet, WMWiFiRouter
2. Something that makes switching tasks from the upper right task bar not suck.
3. An LED flashlight app, if your phone has an LED
4. Different browser like Opera Mini (fast but basic), Skyfire (supports Flash), and Opera Mobile. You do NOT want to use Pocket IE because it's a real piece of shit.
5. Windows Media Player sucks. CorePlayer.
6. A different file explorer because the Microsoft one blows. Total Commander.
7. GPS
8. Mark all (emails) as read. For some stupid reason the email manager that comes stock doesn't have this option, forcing you to go through them one by one in order to have them marked as read and to get rid of that unread email notification.
