*must* ddr2 ram be installed in pairs?

my gut tells me no, but then i've never bothered with it. each module should be 32 bits wide, so it wouldn't need pairing like, say, rambus. but i have no idea how intel designs their memory controllers.

and, if you can install uneven amounts in each bank, will it work in proper dual channel mode?

you can install it as a single dimm or as doubles. for best performance, you want to get a dual channel kit.

i have 2 sticks of 512mb of DDR2 533 working in dual channel, it was so friggin expensive that it better still be good for my next mobo upgrade.

It says best installed in pairs because that usually means it can be used in Dual channel which increases the bandwidth.

Until later this year that is.........all the upcoming M2 socket chips will be DDR2....
