I might be getting a 360 for my birthday and I was wondering what games I should consider buying. I'm fairly broad in my tastes, but I tend to gravitate towards FPS and RPG games. I'm definatly not into the whole Guitar Hero/Rockband thing. It's not something I really enjoyed playing.

Some games I am considering:

FPS:
COD 4
Halo 3
Gears of War
Bioshock

RPG:
Mass Effect

I'm not sure of other genres I would want to play, but I'm open to suggestions.

Also, would I be better suited for FPS/RPG games on the 360 or PS 3? I don't think I'll use the bluray feature on the PS 3 that much.

Suggested Games:

FPS:
Orange Box - spidey07
Rainbow Six: Vegas - mugs
Ghost Recon: Advanced War Fighter - Flatscan

RPG:
Lost Odyssey - randay

Action Adventure:
Crackdown - Yreka
Dead Rising - Yreka
Devil May Cry 4 - Zugzwang152
Saints Row - mugs
The Cause - mugs
The Godfather - mugs
GTA IV - mugs

Sports:
Fight Night Rd 3 - Yreka
Project Gotham 4 - Modeps

Farming(?):
Viva Pinata - tw1164

Xbox Live Arcarde - Queasy

Those FPS along with The Orange Box will keep you busy for a long time. I would consider those must haves.

I already have the Orange Box on the PC. It certainly has been one of my best computer game purchases

The Orange Box is great as spidey said. Portal is a fantastic game (part of the Orange Box)

Also Rainbow Six: Vegas.

COD 4----Great game on both 360 and PS3
Halo 3----Overrated
Gears of War ----On PC
Bioshock----Great but on PC also

RPG:
Mass Effect----Don't know, haven't played it.

Even though your not going to be using the Blu ray much, I would say go with the PS3 if it is an option. 1) Will last longer 2) Runs cooler 3) No where near as noisy 4) Great exclusives coming out this year.

At least those are the options I went for. And the biggest was reliability.

I understand that there are reliability issues on the 360 and I also know that many of the games on the 360 are ported. However, I'm trying to get a feel for the kind games offered, not the console itself. Part of the reason I'm partial to the 360 is because most of my friends have a 360 and being able to sit down and play a game multilayer with 4-6 people simultaneously is pretty awesome. For example, Halo 3 is a pretty average game, but when you throw in 4 people playing on live right next to each other it suddenly becomes a lot more fun.

Then if that is the case, absolutely go with the 360

Don't worry about that reliability nonsense either. It has a 3 year warranty on the RRoD, so the worst case is you're without your 360 for a month. That would suck, but the game selection is worth it IMO. I haven't played my PS3 since I finished Uncharted back in December. If you can't live without it for a month (understandable), buy it at Costco. Their return policy will cover you.

The problem doesn't seem to be replacing the 360 at all. Rather, it seems to be finding a place that still has the premium in stock. Other than ebay and Gamestop's used 360s, they all seem to be OOS.

There was a thread on combination Live/split-screen games, but I can't find it. Halo 3 is 2/console co-op, 4 multi; I think GRAW2 is 2, most games are 1 only. If you mean separate TVs/monitors, ignore my comment.

I've read good things about Ghost Recon: Advanced War Fighter, and it's quite cheap used ($10 after coupon). I've also seen Dead Rising recommended. I ordered both last week.

Yup, we all have our own xbox's and TV's(well, a 2407wfp for me, but it works :p). Added the games to the suggested list.

Gears of War wasn't nearly as good as I expected. I actually really disliked it. Try to get a demo before you buy it.

Dead Rising FTW

Dont think there is a demo for Gears of War... there didn't need to be, that thing sold like nothing. Plus, it ruled for the time it did come out. Now, if you pick it up, it may not be as great compared to some other titles but its still a decent purchase.

All the stuff I would mention has already been mentioned except for Project Gotham 4. If you'd like you can pick up PGR3 as well for fairly cheap because it was a launch title.

I don't know if you like the GTA series, but if you do there are at least 4 games from that genre on the 360, all can be had pretty cheaply used.

- Crackdown has already been mentioned; I think Crackdown is the best in the genre on the 360 so far. I don't think a sequel is planned, which sucks. Crackdown puts you on the other side - you're a cop, and you have to take down ~21 gang leaders. That's all you have to do, kill 21 guys. There are no missions. It's really well done.
- Saints Row is more similar to the GTA series, but it expands on it in some ways (good ways)
- Just Cause is one of the games I'm playing right now. You're a CIA agent attempting to overthrow the government of a tropical island. Lots of fun, but not a whole lot of variety in the side missions
- The Godfather - I've played this one on the original Xbox, but not all the way through. It's a pretty good game.

And of course, GTA IV is coming out.

Its not THAT old, and it is one of the finest games ever created.
