Muslims torch Christian homes in southern Egypt

CAIRO – Muslims set fire overnight to at least 10 houses belonging to Coptic Christians in a village in southern Egypt over rumors that a Christian resident had an affair with a Muslim girl, security officials said Tuesday.

The officials said security forces sealed off the village of al-Nawahid in Qena province, some 290 miles (465 kilometers) south of Cairo, to prevent the violence from spreading to neighboring towns. They said several people were arrested.

The attacks started after locals spotted a young Copt and a Muslim girl together at night inside the village cemetery, the officials said. They added that both were put under police custody as authorities investigate.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

The village was calm by nightfall, after religious leaders from both communities persuaded their followers to end the confrontation. Residents called on police to withdraw.

Clashes between Christians and Muslims occasionally occur in southern Egypt, mostly over land or disputes over church construction. But sectarian tensions have also been on the rise recently in the capital.

Last year in Qena, a Coptic man was accused of kidnapping and raping a 12-year-old Muslim girl. The alleged assault led to widespread protests by the Muslim community and increased tensions between the two religious groups, which culminated in the murder of six Copts and one Muslim security guard at a church on Jan. 6.

Coptic Christians make up about 10 percent of Egypt's population of 80 million. Copts and Muslims generally live in peace, though tension and violence occasionally flare.

Human rights groups say attacks on Copts are on the rise, underscoring the government's failure to address chronic sectarian strains in a society where religious radicalism is gaining ground.

The government insists Christians enjoy the same rights as Muslims.

Extremists? Those are "normal" Muslims. Extremists are the ones that live in the US and successfully live integrated in peace breaking the rules of Islam.

It's OK - they weren't really Muslims.

Exactly. We all know that real Muslims are tolerant and peaceful people. Terrorists aren't actual Muslims even though they follow their religious texts closer than others and commit their acts in the name of Allah.

I object to the use of "muslims". "muslims" would never do something like this. "muslims" are tolerant, peaceful people, who embrace other cultures and ways of life.

Didn`t you mean to say muslims do this all the time? Especially to infadels in the name of Allah?
Of course Muslims embrace other cultures, while they seek to undermine that cultures traditions and way of life...Shira Law is a good example...lol...

But have one teenager (who happened to be a muslim) be beaten up in New York (by a teenager who didn't happen to be a muslim) over something unrelated to religion and you would have thought the world ended.

Begone with this drivel... it does not sell airtime on the major news networks.... and thus is of no consequence.

Actually I bet if this had been Christians burning Muslim homes in Egypt it would get exactly the same amount of air time on American major news networks. Know why? It happened in freakin' Egypt. Why you would think a string of house burnings in Egypt would be more than a footnote no matter the parties is beyond me. Oh wait I know, instead of it being about geography and the fact that this happened far away you want it to be about the 'MSM' and its supposed pro Islam bias. This has zero to do that.

Sorry to have interrupted your anit-Islam circle jerk, feel free to continue high fiving each other.

This is outrageous....why? You have people doing what people have been doing for centuries, committing violent acts in the name of some made up reason whether that be religion, race, gender or a whole host of other " justifications".

Stupid link. Should be fixed now. Dramatic links to make a point are far less dramatic when the link is broken.

Serves you right. This is about "muslims" torching Christian homes in Egypt, not "muslim" plight in America. Your attempt at deflection has owned you.

Probably more political than religious. True religious people don't do such things, do they?

Religion is used in political and self motivated ways all over the world. It just so happens that it is more prevalent in the Muslim world than other places - or that we hear of.

The Imam building the mosque in NYC represents a quieter form of Islam. Maybe it is the true form of Islam or not but I would probably assume that most Muslims tend to be like him rather than the Imams and other muslim leaders who use their position to bring out the hatred in people.
