Thats not only moronic, it's dangerous.

You mean you can't recognize her from her drivers license picture?

"I don't show my face to strangers or unrelated males," Freeman said in an earlier Local 6 News report.

What's the problem, she could not find a chic in the whole dmv to snap her picture?

"The tradition of the hijab stems from a trio of verses in the Al-Ahzab section of the Quran, one of which reads: "Tell thy wives and thy daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them (when they go abroad). That will be better, so that they may be recognised and not annoyed."

Even within the Islamic religion, the form and function of the veil is widely disputed. Some Muslims take a loose interpretation of the verse, believing it does not mandate Muslim women to wear the veil. Others take a strict interpretation. But even then, some women cover only their hair, some cover only part of their face, and some ? like Freeman ? cover all but their eyes."

If she takes a photo without the veil, then continues to wear it and then gets pulled over the cop is going to ask her to remove the veil to confirm identity and thats another mess.

Hehehe, someone could kill her and put on her veil. Then no one will ever know if its really her.

And one other thing, since you need to show your face to get a license, I guess the headless horseman wouldn't be able to get one anytime soon. He'll just have to continue riding his horse.

How about Michael Jackson? Does he have to take off his nose when taking a DL pic?

We should also make people with dentures take them off if they plan on smiling.

Women, no makeup please. That covers your face.

If you're a black woman, those extensions have to go, they're not real. Old bald men, take off those toupees.

i disagree. When people ask for a photo id you automatically think drivers license. Every authority recognize the two fold purpose of the driver's license as that of a confirmation of driving abilities and also as a form of identification.

Making an acception for this woman, even for a religeous ideal, is not valid since, as said before, driving is a priviledge not a right.

Using your logic, if she wears the veil in the photo and gets pulled over, how does the police officer know the person on the driver's license is her?

Because she's wearing the veil, duh. ;-)

how does a state trooper know that this isn't the girl's AK47 carrying terrorist cousin?

If you are pulled over and asked for your driver's liscense and registration, you need to be able to prove you are the person stated on your liscense. That is why everyone's liscense has their picture on it in the first place.

What is particularly zaney is that this freak is an American-born 'convert' to Islam.

You know that we have reached a pinnacle of freedom when people decide directly to oppress themselves.

She will lose. If she doesn't, she should. Freedom of religion isn't absolute, no right is (I learned that from gun banning liberals).

Maybe I should get one of those Alfred E. Newman masks and claim I belong to some MAD Cult. You know, if a cop pulls me over, and wants to positively identify me so he orders me to remove my mask, I can just point to my DL photo which shows Alfred E. Newman. See? Its me, officer!

I don't disagree with your assessment of her case, but I will say that to suggest that all muslims are oppressed, and those who choose Islam as their faith are purposefully oppressing themselves is pretty obtuse and I just hope you're slightly joking. Aaanyway...

Sorry, wrong again. Sure, in certain countries women are oppressed, but then again, they were here too save for the past century (and that's a generous esimate). Muslim women as a whole are not oppressed.

I don't see why. A duly appointed enforcement officer asking a woman to remove her veil for identification purposes is in no way an infringement on 4th Amendment rights, and if she refuses, she should be arrested and tried under appropriate statutes for refusal to obey a police officer in the legal performance of his duties.

Strangers include both sexes.

Well there is a difference between oppressing one's self and being oppressed. I was talking of the former, not the latter, at least in free countries where dumb people actually choose to belong to a repressive cult.
