You have to understand what dishonor means. To be dishonored means to make it look to others that you are as worthless as you feel. Honor is the most important thing there is to folk who feel worthless and hide that worthlessness behind a mask of honor.

The acquisition of honor, reputation, fame, glory, etc are all features of the folk of ego who hide from themselves how worthless they were made to feel.

Folk would rather die than be unmasked and exposed to their real and deadly self hate.

So while you hold these poor tribal fools in contempt, know that you too will act the same if the right strings are pulled.

I'm sick of the sarcasm about the 'religion of peace'.

Some Muslim practitioners live in backwards tribal cultures. Some have barbaric practices. That doesn't justify the attack on the religion.

I can show you the US backing terrible dictators that tortured people to death all because they'd be cooperative with out corporations making anice profit.

I can show you tens of thousands of Americans a year who are killed for lack of healthcare available on all other industrialized nations.

Attack the specific problems. Don't attack a religion in bigotry.

Muslims I've known in the US have tended to be some of the most thoughtful, gentle, caring, generous people, much more so that the average American IMO.

Enough of the thoughtless sarcasm "religion of peace".

You aren't ready to help the primitive people evolve while you are still part of the problem yourself, giving in to the easy attack on a religion instead of dealing with the actual problem.

There are horrific practices in the world - not the least of which is poverty so many are so here in the 'nation of peace' are unwilling to lift a finger about.

It's a horrible story - about that family, that practice. It's not useul as propaganda against a religion anymore than the Salem witch trials are useful as propaganda against a religion.

For the most part, I agree. There are nuts in any group of people. There have been killers of every religion, and killers without religion. Just because someone does something bad and they belong to a certain faith, doesn't mean the faith is bad.

Its analogous to saying "Oh, that black guy killed someone, so much for 'non-violent' black people."

Thank you for providing the perspective of the cultural relativist. I now understand there is no good and bad, right and wrong. It all depends on how you look at it, right?

So while you hold these poor tribal fools in contempt, know that you too will act the same if the right strings are pulled.

Well I'd for one like to know what kind of strings you need to have pulled so you bury your daughter alive.

I'm sure you are going to come up with a very good explanation about how Islam practitioners are collectively ranked last in the world in science, economy, terrorism, human rights, separation of church and state, women equality and democracy. It's all a mere coincidence, right? the work of the oppressive white man? CIA conspiracy?

A couple hundred years ago, they were first in all of those categories, the christian nations where dead last. Things change over time.

It wasn't a couple. It was more than a 1000 years ago. And if you're talking about ancient Arab and Egyptian scientists, they weren't Muslim back then.

Try from about 1000AD to about 1600AD. Ever hear of the Ottoman Empire ?

The Ottoman empire was hardly "advanced". It had widespread control over today's Arab territories, right, but that hardly means anything. Besides, they were much more tolerant to other religions compared to the Muslim states of today. The funny thing is most Muslims will call this process "progress"

Read your own links, buddy, they are talking of 7th century AD, up to the decline at 13th century AD - about 1000 years ago or more. That correlates pretty well to what I said.

...
is traditionally dated from the 8th to 13th centuries A.D.,[1][2] but has been extended to at least the 15th century by recent scholarship
Try reading more then 2 sentences. And that was just the golden age. The ottoman empire was a strong world power clear up to the 1800's, I stated the 1600's because that is about when the ottoman empire began to decline. Up until the 1600's they where one of the most advanced cultures out there.

"The town is known for being very conservative and religious; it is a stronghold of the once powerful Naksibendi Islamic sect, which was banned by modern Turkey's founding father Ataturk in 1925 but has revived in recent years.

But while it is true that most such killings are carried out in conservative Muslim communities, the practice is linked more to the customs of this region of Turkey, than to religious belief. "

Kurdish honor killings are quite commonplace in Turkey and Iraq, that is part of why the Kurds are not very highly regarded in either country.

I don't think any of us (i hope) would kill our offspring because of them dishonoring their family but it's not unheard of in ANY society. In cultures such as conservative Kurdish and India families it's quite commonplace regardless of where they live in the world. For some reason they share the same fucked up value system even though it's most probably because of different influences. India has their old caste system and Kurds have their Naksibendi and Yarsan honor system.
