Musicians using Cubase - Asio Directx driver pb

Hi!
i'm now installing a new system on a friend pc,
and i got this problem:
the audio software Cubase 5R1 from Steinberg
doesnt see the Asio Direct X driver...
(Option, Audio config, system...) the only
ASIO peripheral wich is proposed in the audio
I/O Frame is the ASIO Multimedia Driver (MME).
Latency is about 765ms!!!!! too high!

software installed:
Win98 SE
Directx 7
Cubase 5R1

Hardware:
Athlon Thunderbird 1.2GHz
Epox 8KTA3
Soundblaster AWE32 ISA
