Musicians: Studio Gear?

I'm looking to set up a small studio in my apt. Nothing Pro quality... just something clean to record my ideas with.

I'm thinking: Echo Layla for D/A conversions.
Alesis EQ.
Beringer Virtualizer for hardware effects box.
Cool Edit Pro 2 for multitracking.

At the very least (and in addition to this) I'm thinking I should probably also get a patch panel and I want some FLAT RESPONSE active studio monitors.

What do you peoples run? Recommendations? How much you think a setup similar to what I've posted would cost? I've already checked out musiciansfriend.com and it seems to be a pretty decent site.

lol Just the computer alone would kill my budget. But that sounds like a killer setup.

Logic is ok, but i only use that to clean already recorded tracts up. Not bad for recording into though. I use reason, pro tools, a keyboard, drum machine, acid pro6, sound forge, and i dont think im missing anything.

Look for home use, you dont need that much, IMO. That stuff also takes a little talent to use. do you have any software that you use right now?

My dad has a studio in Tulsa and I used to spend a decent amount of time over there.. So, I do have some experience mixing and mastering with Cool Edit Pro.
I've also used Sound Forge... but I prefer Cool Edit.

Sound forge i got for free.😀
What i ment was do you have any type of music making programs?

music making programs? you mean... to sample and loop? cause i find that annoying as hell. any asshat can take a sample and amend it to another sample. I write and play my own music. I'd like to be able to record my own music. Now, if I misunderstood you, forgive my rant. My recording software experience == Cool Edit + Sound Forge.

Lol. Pro tools is one of the most widly used programs in the biz. I can plug in my bass, guitar, piano, record it out. I plug in a piano and it will give me about 5000 diffrent instruments i can play with the piano. I can write, record, mix, and master. Ill give you some links.

If your not to knowledgable I would go with reason though. Little bit downgraded but perfact for a budget. Like 400-600 bucks. Fruity loops is what your talking about, and yes people who do that stuff need to pull their heads out of their asses and realize they cant do anything good with that junk.

Reason looks pretty cool. Downloading the demo now. I'll poke through it later tonight. But, what do you think for interfacing to a PC? I think the layla would do a great job for D/A and a patch panel to allow me to patch in my Korg Trinity, Ensoniq ESQ1, and guitars. Also, what about flat response studio monitors? (something decent for monitors is important to me as i want to hear exactly what i record.)

I have a line on an Echo Layla 20bit for ~$150 which is a GREAT price. (and it looks cool in a rack 🙂 )
