Musical instruments

Anyone here play a musical instrument? I am sure we have at least some members who do. I was thinking about learning one with the violin in particular. I used to play saxophone in high school but it's been a while since I played that. I have a keyboard and would like to learn it also, but for some reason I am drawn to the violin. Any thoughts on that? I'd like something that I could play solo but also in a group and I love a versatile sound. If not the violin, then what do you guys think I should try?

Also, any recommendations on beginner violins/other instruments if I choose that route? How much should I spend and are there any brands in particular? Thanks.

Quit screwing around trying to find your soul mate and just play something!
You played saxophone, have a keyboard (but won't apply any frontal cortex to it)
AND come here looking for advice?!?!?! Unless you have inordinately small hands, just pick one up off of Craigslist and book some lessones to get past the hump, and

PLAY !!!!!!

Violin seems hard to me. I've picked one up a couple of times, but it's one of the few instruments that felt absolutely foreign to me. Everything else I felt like I could half assed play if I put in the time, but not violin. From the way it's held, to the whole bow thing, it was just weird. Also, playing in tune is probably harder than average. You don't have frets, so when you try to play something, there's an infinite variety of wrong notes you can play compared to the 1 right place you can play it.

Your advice sucked. I played sax back in HS and thought it was merely ok. I have a keyboard but it's not a full piano and doesn't sound near as nice, but I still want to play it. I am looking for something new and different.

By the way, I can play Moonlight Sonata 1st Movement on my keyboard. But the amount of keys is limited because it isn't full size. But this alone shows I've actually attempted to learn, regardless of what you assumed.

From what I have read, others echo the sentiment that it is a bit harder to play. It sounds beautiful when played well, but the learning curve is pretty steep it seems. Thanks for your response.

I used to play saxophone, but I can't really justify doing it these days. It's not interesting enough to be worth the time for me. :p

I agree. As I've matured, I've found a bit less interest in the saxophone and want something more versatile that can be used when I am mad, excited, pensive or romantic. I think the violin can do this. The saxophone can play some jazzy and romantic songs, but it doesn't appeal to me like some other versatile instruments (piano, violin, guitar all come to mind).

Another sax player. I played 5th - 12th grade and was pretty decent. Made all-state a few times. Haven't touched it since.

Been playing the guitar on and off for about 7 years.

I also enjoy playing around in FL Studio.

WAH WAH WAh < sound of trombones....
Look just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it sucks.
It wasn't what you EXPECTED for advice, but it still holds.
Your answer is contained within your last sentence.
"New and Different" sounds a lot like a "I'm bored/ I have a short attention span/ yada yada.
<BTW, I am able to play violin, viola, cello, concert bass, Bass guitar, guitar, banjo, piano, organ. Not very well mind you, but I can read the music and knock a few recognizable tunes out of a couple of those.
Haven't touched a thing in over 8 years, but it's like riding a bicycle.

Sounds like you are the one with the short attention span. Not me. Especially with the "not very well" comment.

I played alto sax. I used to play quite well. Just doesn't fit my personality as much these days. I'll check out those videos when I get home.

If you're interested in playing in a band, think of all the cool things you could do with an amp and effects. If you don't like sax, you don't like it, but thinking outside the box may freshen it up for you.

I think I am more interested in playing in an orchestra. That is, of course, a bit far-fetched, but I would love to play for a small-city orchestra like one we have around here. But failing that, I'd like to play an orchestra instrument solo.

Hey bite me jackass. I learned EVERYONE of those before the sperm that formed your zygote was even materialized.
Fuck off.
When I say "Not very well", it's because of the ones who do play well who I've known and compare myself too. Schon, Vai and Johnson spring to mind.
Try Guitar Hero. It's more your speed.

*facepalm* I shouldn't have fed the troll. You should chill out man, really. Is it actually worth getting into a dispute over? No, it's not. Too much hostility.

If you like orchestral music, how about cello? That raises the entry costs significantly, but they have a sweet sound that's nicer to my ears. Violin's probably more versatile, especially if you get into folk music(think Irish and gypsy), but I like cello best as a solo string.

You're a pompous blowhard who doesn't play anything.

I'm going to ignore the troll here...

Thanks man. I will check out some videos of them on YouTube and see what I can find in the local major cities as far as pricing goes if I am interested in them. Advice like this is always appreciated.
