Anybody who attempts a Led Zeppelin song other than Led Zeppelin themselves - that includes that bug-eyed piece of trash Puff Daddy, or whatever he calls himself these days.

Have you listened to the Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes Live at the Greek CD? It's excellent IMO, although it's not exactly a remake as Page is involved.

quick list of good cover songs that I found in the music collection on my pc:

All Along the Watchtower - Jimmy Hendrix (Bob Dylan original)
Black Magic Woman - Santana (Fleetwood Mac original)
China Girl - David Bowie (Iggy Pop original)
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley (Leonard Cohen original)
Hazy Shade of Winter - The Bangles (Simon and Garfunkel orginal)
Live And Let Die - Guns 'n Roses (Paul McCartney original)
The Man Who Sold The World - Nirvana (David Bowie cover)

edit: and just about everything by Me First ;)

nice list

It is indeed. I still think the greatest-ever cover version is probably "Respect" by Aretha Franklin (original by the late, great Otis Redding).

As for the bad ones, I thought that A Perfect Circle version of John Lennon's "Imagine" was about the crappiest cover I've ever heard. I don't take popular music all that seriously, and won't throw around terms like "sacreligious," but I did think it was disrespectful to cover the signature song by one of the 20th century's greatest songwriters, after his death, in a way that seemed so inconsistent with the spirit of the original. Big  from me.

The MOM albums have some good covers including the best Wipeout (Herman the German's was good too) and Miserlou.

BUT, the Styx's Big Band Theory bites the big one. All covers and they suck. What is it with some of the older bands? They have completely lost the ability to write new material.

Note to aspiring musical geniuses: If you don't have enough talent to bring me something original and fresh, please don't resort to destroying old favorites and thereby showing what a no-talent assclown you really are. I don't care how much you need the money. If you are really starving, please feel free to explore your options in something less offensive than remaking classics, like gay animal porn, but leave my danged music alone.

Your pal,

Amazingly enough... that *is* Wilson Phillips. Scary, huh?

Negative. My Dad even likes Metallica's version (not as much as Seger's but he likes it).

Korn's cover of One wasn't anywhere near as bad as their horrible butchering of Another Brick in the Wall.

but then you have the genius remakes, like the Scissor Sisters "comfortably numb", this mortal coil "song to the siren", etc.

You must use the word "genius" differently than I do. That version of Comfortably Numb isn't as horrible as Korn's Another Brick in the Wall, but it's not good either.

Wow, I think it sucks. Oh well, different strokes.

Just remembered, Cakes remake of I will Survive is pretty good.

I like both Metallica's and Seger's....different mentality though.

I like Depeche and Manson's Personal Jesus too.

I listen to lyrics....so YMMV.
