What's popular in your area?

I live in British Columbia Canada...right now the popular local bands/musicians are as follows:

Hawksley Workman: Striptease
Nelly Furtado, I've only heard "I'm like a bird"
Econoline Crush has 3 or is it 4 albums out? all good...
Gob, their most popular right now is: I hear you calling
of course Our Lady Peace is huge (Toronto band)
Monochrome, I can't remember the name of the song I heard by them, but it was pretty good.

I saw Our Lady Peace in concert at GM Place in 98 after they released the album 'Clumsy', they had EverClear open for them...awesome concert.
They have since released 'Happiness is not a Fish you Can Catch' and recently they released 'Spiritual Machine', all excellent, but, Naveed was their best work.

they keep playing that stupid nelly song that goes like hey, must be the money. the thing is most people here played that song out back in August & September, so now it's 2x as annoying.

Do a search on Our Lady Peace, 'Right Behind You' and 'Life' those are from the Spiritual Machine album...from Clumsy, search for 'Superman's Dead' 'Clumsy' and 'Automatic Flowers' from the Happiness is not a Fish you can Catch album, look for "Is anybody home", and 'Happiness...' they're there...better yet, just do a search on Our Lady Peace...it will show results with the names mis-spelled.

Rap and hip-hop is popular, but a lot of people are starting to like alternative and rock.

Rap, hip-hop and bubble-gum-pop is all sh#t going down the sh#tter these days. That music is such plastic trash that should be discarded long ago before the record company marketers ever tried to force that down our throats. Do you get the impression that I don't like that type of music? lol
:p

I'm glad that alt/rock is on the upswing again; just like 10 years ago. Perhaps it will culminate into another mid-decade elite wall of sound, just as what happened in the hey-days of the mid-90s with the Pumpkins, Hole, Pilots, Alanis, etc. Althernative/Rock rules!

Sadly, The Smashing Pumpkins have disintegrated; they are my favorite band of all time. Their music is timeless and will live into infamy! I can't wait for Billy Corgan to come back into the scene, as his solo efforts plan. Perhaps he will once again be our fearless leader!

But for now, I suggest checking out these bands: Spoon, ColdPlay, IdleWild, Guided By Voices, Mogwai
