So i was channel surfing recently and i saw that much music was having some sort of awards show ( Teen awards?). It got me thinking, and took me into a serious debate with a few of my friends.

I told them that the new generation of singers ( Miley Cyrus, Just Bieber?, Jonas Brothers) have no talent. Almost all of them agreed. If you think about it, most of these singers are now young adults catering to a crowd of 12 yearolds. Is music as a whole doomed? There seems to be no effort put into the music, and more into drama.

my parents thought that Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, etc all had no talent.

some acts have genuine talent, some are flashes in the pan, some are pure corporate creations, and others still will have careers for the next 20 years even though they've got no musical talent. it's not a generational thing.

You think this is any different than manufactured pop music from the past decade?

1) Find attractive underage girl of questionable talent
2) Pull pre-written song from pile
3) Over-produce and autotune song
4) Make video with singer in provocative poses
5) Tour and promote to death

Rinse and Repeat

I tend to believe that it's pretty well-known where music is going.

The industry has got it down to a science. Heck, I'm sure there is psychology involved as well with marketing and lyrics. They have a formula, probably a well thought-out chart with standard chord progressions for different settings. These 'artists' hardly sway from the progressions or do any type of riffing. If there is any, it's most likely somebody brought into the studio to write those parts in the recording.

They have a formula to bring in cash. Not make art. occasionally a real artist breaks through this though.

I tend to look for my music outside of the US. It seems like many other countries haven't given in to this scheme.

They may have no musical talent and might be annoying as all fuck but they sure as hell found an extremely profitable niche.

true it could all change in time, but i don't know. Jonas brothers? are you kidding me?
the best selling album the same year that Nirvana was taking over the world was Billy Ray Cyrus... and look at the top singles from that same year:

there's always been crap music mixed in with the good.

name any contemporary time period and you'll be able to find wildly popular bands that sucked.

the 70's were an amazing time for rock, but it was disco that was getting radio play.
