I have to pick one more class for my fall scheduale. Should i take music theory 1 or a guitar class? Is music theory 1 really hard? I really need to boost my gpa, (dropped from 3.2 to 3.0 last quarter), so i plan on just taking the easier of the two and take the other the next semester since the GPA ending the fall semester is what will end up being seen for my first coop job.

I don't know about difficulty, but music theory is BORING, IMO.

Yet again, I contribute nothing! Haha! :p

i dont know what you do in music theory but it sounds boring, but its just me. Besides, i'm a frustrated guitarist wanna- be.so, i vote for guitar class.

while music theory sounds less appealing that a guitar class, my vote is to take it. Music theory is invaluable, shedding some light on how music works. Its much easier to pick up on stuff if you know the basis of its composition. Invaluable IMHO.

If you have some previous experience with music, like band or strings, you won't really need theory.

I had 4 semesters of music theory in college. There is a LOT more to theory than you learn in band. Theory can be interesting as it will teach you about chords, notation, and lots of other things. Theory is very broad in terms of what you do. My theory class had lecture on certain days, sight-singing(singing in front of the class), and quizzes on Fridays. The quizzes were listening quizzes dealing with what chords were played, inversions, diminished, augmented, etc.... I wouldn't take theory as a "fluff" class but if you seriously want to learn about music, it IS an invaluable class. :)

It gets more difficult as you go. It doesn't start off hard but as the semester progresses, it will become more difficult.

Beginning music theory isn't very difficult but it requires a lot of memorization. Having prior music experience, esp. with piano, helps tremendously.
