Music sales strong despite digital piracy...

Just curious, but could something like itunes have come out years ago, or was the whole point that the RIAA didn't want to allow the selling of digital music online only until recently?

No, that was the research by the Harvard guys. I don't remember seeing the numbers posted until today. I could be wrong.
 
along with this i heard on the radio today that the RIAA has dismissed two reports citing that record sales in previous years have been down due to not just piracy but the economy, the fact that there was fewer music released, less concerts and other factors.

but of course none of that is true, the RIAA clearly knows for a fact it is just piracy 😛

And if journalists get too pushy about rising sales they'll simply claim it's due to them fighting piracy

I remember reading an article in the financial times a few days ago about a harvard study that suggests that music piracy on the internet and decline in sales of music have no correlation. i think it was an article about steve jobs and Itunes. can't remember exactly.
 
It must be due to all their lawsuits scaring people, causing them to actually buy the music!!!!!111one
 
Eric Boorstin of Princeton has an written an interesting paper on the impact of file sharing on CD sales. He analyzes the differences for four age groups, controlling for income. Here's the abstract:
In this paper I examine the effect of Internet access on compact disc sales.
I combine U.S. census data on population characteristics with Nielson SoundScan data on
CD sales for 99 metropolitan areas in the years 1998, 2000, and 2001. Controlling for
year, income, and the fixed effects within each area, I estimate the relationship between
Internet access and CD sales for four age groups. Overall, Internet access has a positive
and statistically significant effect on CD sales. For children aged 5 to 14, Internet access
has a negative but statistically insignificant effect on CD sales. For youths aged 15 to 24,
Internet access has a negative and statistically significant effect on CD sales. And for the
adult groups aged 25 to 44 and aged 45 and older, Internet access has a significant
positive effect. My findings suggest that file sharing is not the cause of the recent decline
in record sales, and that file sharing decreases the record purchases of younger people
while increasing the purchases of older people.
