My friend and I are arguing over what will happen within next 20 years or so if somehow all Music downloads, P2P, torrents, etc were permanently stopped. I said that I felt there would be a huge decline in Mp3 player sales because most people download their music. On the other hand he says that the majority of people buy their music.

What are the actual percentage ratio of people who buy their music to download.

20 years from now? You'll be downloading food and there will be no music stores.

I'm hoping for one of those food replicators from star trek myself.

I'm guessing that there will be a fairly large decline in the sale of CDRs, MP3 players, and CD burners. While plenty of people buy their music, there is still a huge chunk of the population which has at least a few technically illegal songs, whether they download them from the internet or copy them from a friend or a friend's CD.

I would buy a shitload of AAPL stock and watch as their itunes sales go through the roof.

Seriously IMHO best way to come up on a shitload of music, is to buy cd's/lots of cds on eBay, and rip em all.

Cheaper than iTunes and waaaaaaaaay cheaper than buying new cd's

It will never be stopped. People will always steal. The only thing that changes over time is the profile of the thief and the method of thievery. Therefore the only thing that can change is the manor in which the music is either created or marketed (sold).

Well, in 20 years I'm guessing you're right, there won' be many mp3 player sales. We'll have moved on by then to some other format and player.

There won't be any mp3 players in 5 years (at least mp3 only). Everyone will be doing everything with their "cell" phones - talking, sending/receiving video, music, surfing web, starting their cars, turning on the lights in their home 1000 miles away ... everything.

I really think that music companies within the next few years are going to give music away for free and make money off of ads/touring/merchandise. You'll have to go to a ad laden website to download music, and they'll make money in a similar way that Google does.

Let's see if I'm right :)

Not to mention you actually have a lossless copy ;)

Yup. Makes little difference in the ipod with regular speakers, but in a sound system it's quite noticeable

If im still alive i will remind you of this. By "few years" did you mean 3, 5, 15? I should be around for 3. 5 is iffy and 15 doubtful. :(

No one can dispute that the business model is horribly flawed. However, i have been buying CDs for a long time (i have >1,250). I have no copyright infringed songs at all, none. There is no doubt that we will see a drastic change to the business model.

In 20 years the artists will figure out that they don't need the record companies to release music.

I say within 5 years. A couple of music companies are already discussing this.
