Music Linked to Marijuana Use

Teens who listen to music that mentions marijuana are significantly more likely to use the drug, a new study finds.
The research was based on surveys with 959 ninth-graders.
"Students who listen to music with the most references to marijuana are almost twice as likely to have used the drug than their peers whose musical tastes favor songs less focused on substance use," said University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine researcher Dr. Brian Primack, who led the study.
"Interestingly, we also found that exposure to marijuana in music was not associated with other high-risk behaviors, such as excessive alcohol consumption," Primack said. "This suggests that there is a real link between the marijuana lyrics and marijuana use."
Among the study participants, 12 percent identified themselves as current marijuana users, with 32 percent identifying themselves as having previously tried the substance. The researchers analyzed the content of songs that the students reported listening to.
The average participant listened to 21.8 hours of music per week and heard about 40 marijuana references in music per day.
Researchers controlled for such demographic variables as age, race, gender, parental education and school grades in analyzing the data.
"Although it may be that heavy exposure to music about marijuana causes marijuana smoking, it may also be that those who smoke marijuana seek out music with lyrics related to marijuana," Primack said.
The study, published online by the journal Addiction, was funded by National Institutes of Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Maurice Falk Foundation.

Every time I think that I'm the only one who's lonely
Someone calls on me
And every now and then I spend my time in rhyme and verse
And curse those faults in me

And then along comes Mary
And does she want to give me kicks , and be my steady chick
And give me pick of memories
Or maybe rather gather tales of all the fails and tribulations
No one ever sees

When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch

When vague desire is the fire in the eyes of chicks
Whose sickness is the games they play
And when the masquerade is played and neighbor folks make jokes
As who is most to blame today

And then along comes Mary
And does she want to set them free, and let them see reality
From where she got her name
And will they struggle much when told that such a tender touch as hers
Will make them not the same

When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch

And when the morning of the warning's passed, the gassed
And flaccid kids are flung across the stars
The psychodramas and the traumas gone
The songs are left unsung and hung upon the scars

And then along comes Mary
And does she want to see the stains, the dead remains of all the pains
She left the night before
Or will their waking eyes reflect the lies, and make them
Realize their urgent cry for sight no more

When we met I was sure out to lunch
Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch

Legalize marijuana and it won't be as cool to put it in musical lyrics, which will then cause marijuana use to go down.

Studies like this always scream correlation does not equal causation. I will have to read more.

We're gonna play you a song, a little bit of rock-n-roll
You gotta let yourself go, the band's gonna take control.
We're gettin' down today
We'll pick you up and take you away
Get down tonight

Smokin', Smokin'
We're cookin' tonight, just keep on tokin'
Smokin', Smokin'
I feel alright, mamma I'm not jokin', yeah.

Get your feet to the floor, everybody rock and roll
You've got nothing to lose just the rhythm and blues, that's all, yeah
We're gonna feel ok
We'll pick you up and take you away
Get down tonight.

Smokin', Smokin'
We're cookin' tonight, just keep on tokin'
Smokin', Smokin'
I feel alright, mamma I'm not jokin', yeah.

Everybody jumpin', dancin' to the boogie tonight
Clap your hands, move your feet
If you don't you know it won't seem right
We're gettin' down today
We'll pick you up and take you away
Get down tonight

We're gettin' down today
We'll pick you up and take you away
Get down tonight, well alright!

most effective way to dunk a biscuit in tea

Luckily someone came up with an explanation for why these retarded papers are published. link.
In 2005 a study by the American Association for the Advancement of Science found that a mention of research in The New York Times would double the number of citations, and coverage on national radio and television could boost the number of references by 1,000%.

Similar research for the UK is being planned by Alex Bentley of Durham University who has said that the increased emphasis on citations and the growing number of online journals is forcing academics to try to make themselves “the Britney Spears of science”, after the overexposed pop star.

If enough people cite your stupid research paper, it was worth doing. It doesn't matter what the paper was about.

(She was living in a single room with three other individuals.
One of them was a male and the other two, well, the other two were females.
God only know what they were up to in there.
And furthermore Susan, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to learn that all four of them
habitually smoke marijuana cigarettes... reefers)

I smoke two joints in the morning.
I smoke two joints at night.
I smoke two joints in the afternoon, it makes me feel alright
I smoke two joints in time of peace, and two in time of war
I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints,
and then I smoke two more

smoked cigarettes 'til the day she died
toke a big spliff of some good sensimillia
smoked cigarettes 'til the day she died
toke a big spliff of some good sensamill..."
"Easy-E were ya ever caught steppin'?" "hell nah!"

Daddy he once told me "son you be hard workin' man"
and Momma she once told me "son you do the best you can"
but, then one day I met a man who came to me and said
"Hard work good, and hard work fine, but first take care of Head"

(guitar solo)

whoa, rock me tonight,
for old time's sake,
whoa-ohh

I think I should get paid to do a study to see if rolling papers, pipes, and hookahs are linked to marijuanna usage.

Now I need copious amounts of marijuana and the items above and some volunteers. We shall all sit in a room with poor ventilation with the items laid out in front of us and see if they lead to anything...

Another completely fucking worthless study.

At least we know which organizations give away money or don't read research proposals -

The study, published online by the journal Addiction, was funded by National Institutes of Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Maurice Falk Foundation.

science likes to use the scientific method instead of "common knowledge" therefore many things which seem obvious are fair game. When a study's findings are contradictory to "common knowledge" the usefulness of this type of thing becomes more apparent. (just an example, there are many other times) The snippet that is posted really doesn't say a whole lot about how the study was conducted or what all was taken into account.
