First question: In death metal and the like, there is often used some sort of percussion instrument that is played very fast, and provides a beat, sounds like "tick tick tick tick;" quicker than a regular drum yet doesnt sound like a cymbal. A good example is in the beginning of the song "Black Seeds of Vengeance" by Nile. It goes "tk-tk-tk-tk-tk-tk-tk-tk-tk-tk, beat, tk-tk-tk-tk-tk-tk-tk-tk-tk". What is it?

Second question: what is the first instrument you hear in the song "Hanging by a Moment" by LifeHouse? It sounded like a bass at first, but it has a gritter sound and sustains throughout almost the entire song if you listen closely.

I don't know the music you've referenced, but playing some sort of custom percussion (like a mutlated sample) in a sequencer loop is fairly common (the tk tk tk tk tk). As far as the bass thing, it could be a bass, there are a number of Midi or Modeling devices out for bass that radically changes the tone & timbre.

Nile is a good band! I personally like the drummer from Slayer and his 32nd notes coming out of the double bass! That guy has got to have some calves from hell!! Another good one to check out is Hypocrisy. If you like Nile or Slayer you'll kill to see them live!

The instrument in the Lifehouse song is a double bass. The different sound is probably just a result of the style of bowing but it could be studio magic - hard to tell anymore.

<< Probably a double bass drum. >>

thats what I was thinking, but it sounds quicker and tinnier than a regular double bass... Its probably just the style of playing or maybe some after-effect stuff...

And I love Slayer and Hypocrisy as well :) Both are awesome bands... "Seasons in the Abyss" has one of the best guitar solos ever IMHO. (and its even cooler when you see the video)

or if he's using a double bass pedal, it could be a muted beat (produced by striking both pedals at the same time), but i'm not sure...
