Music for a wedding reception, I need some suggestions!

Help me ATOT, you're my only hope!

Well my wedding is now less than 3 weeks away, the misses and I are meeting with the DJ for the final planning tonight and we're supposed to have a list of songs we'd like played at the wedding reception to keep people entertained and dancing.

Well I'm no dancer by any means and have no clue what would be some good music to have played to keep everyone well entertained but still appeal to a large generation gap considering I'll have people there from the ages of 88 to 8 years old.

Anyone have any suggestion or has anyone recently been married and have a copy of their reception play list?

EDIT: If it helps, we're both 26 and both like rock, alternative, metal and soft rock for the most part. I don't think rock is the best music for people to dance to though...

Well I'm sure that song will be played, but for one thing the reception is mid day (we're having a early wedding) and secondly we won't be serving any alcohol at the wedding or reception, only at the after party we're having that evening and for that I'm just going to make a play list on m Ipod and let it go, not DJ there.

You shouldn't have to tell the DJ all the songs to play, they do that for a living. You just tell them the stuff you don't want to hear.

Some suggestions would still be good to get an idea but I'm not counting on getting every min of the reception being figured out or anything.

Unless there's a particularly special one or one that you want played at a particular time. (ie: it was the song you first danced to.)

Well we have all the required songs figured out, such as the first dance, mother/son, daughter/father dance.

Just the filler stuff is all really.

In any regard, the Dj should be smart enough to figure out what people will dance to. Songs that cut across the generation gap like 'The Twist' or 'Shout' and such will have everyone dancing.

We were just married 3 months ago, and threw a merengue in the mix... 'Suavemente' I think is the name of it. That had everyone dancing.

You really need to assess what type and age of people will be in attandance. If you have a lot of older family, make sure to tell your DJ to play many slower songs and not a lot of "bump and grind" stuff. Feel free to really play some of your favorite songs even if they are not really "dance-able". It is ok if there is a little while that no one is dancing. That doesnt mean that they are not having fun. As much as you don't want to hear the chicken dance or the YMCA, others love the tackiness and will make everyone dance.
We had a do not play list and it was followed but people did request things from it and the DJ said he did not have that song.

Enjoy the reception and ask the DJ to play some special songs to you and your new wife throughout the entire reception. Make a promise to each other that when you hear those songs, to drop whatever you are doing to dance together.

Sounds like the Smiths but more modern (just throwing it out there since you mentioned that you liked rock/alternative rock and it's sort of danceable.

We have a few songs we already marked as "do not play" such as macarena but we do have songs already selected that neither one of us like but is just for the fun factor for everyone else like YMCA and the Electric Slide.

I'm thinking I'll take your husbands suggestion there and just let the DJ fill in the gaps since thats what we're paying him for anyways right?

Yep.... just let him do his stuff... hopefully you researched the DJ and trust him enough.

PS, make sure you don't have the old folks sitting next to the speakers or they will bitch that the music is too loud
