Music File Format

I'm trying to download some music and what I want has .flac rather than .mp3. What is .flac? How do I convert it to .mp3?
 
.flac is a lossless format whcih allows the audio file to sound (theoretically) the exact same as the original from which it was compressed. .flac is a compression method (it stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec) and to compress it is bad. However if all you are doing is putting it on your mp3 player or listening on some cheap 2 channel speakers go ahead and convert and compress. Audiophiles will tell you no, and the audiophile in me tells you no, however if the end device or program won't play .flac go ahead and convert to mp3. However if you are on a mac or have an ipod, see if you can convert it to .aac lossless and if you are using Media Player try to convery to .wma lossless. both are also lossless formats and widely more acceptable. Or maybe convert it to .wav....

I think I got all that right.
