Used to use Winmx but seems to have gone by the wayside. Any suggestions for alternatives that are freeware? What about low cost software too...any suggestions?

Curious about what everyone else may be using and/or recommend.
Thanks

What kind of music? Copyrighted or not. If not, then i would check the bands website.

FrostWire Beta has just been released. It's on the Gnutella Network. It's pretty much a rebaged LimeWire, however with LimeWire about to filter unlicensed music, it wouldn't hurt to start using it now.

emule is great for full albums (stored as .zip or .rar files). you have to have a little patience, tho. leave it to download overnight, or over several nights.

eMule is my P2P of choice, but as you said it can take very long to download things. The good thing is that there are tons of files.

You could also use KCeasy. It connects to both Ares and Gnutella. Those are probably the best networks for songs.

Soulseek is great for hard-to-find stuff. Usenet has been enough for me, though. Small monthly payment=anything and everything you want @ full download speeds. (500-600 KB/s). I think I've downloaded nearly 100gbs in the past week (nearly 70 in two days)
