I've been wanting to improve my listening skills in my German class and I need some recommendations for music and television shows. Music wise, I like vocal trance like Ferry Corsten, classic rock, some new rock like Mute Math.

Any takers?

I watch movies. It's convenient because you can use the English subtitles. At least at my level, I still need that. What would be great is if movies came with subtitles in their own languages so that you could learn how things are spelled at the same time. I get my movies through the Canadian equivalent of netflix, which has pretty decent selection. I try to get stuff that comes well recommended on rottentomatoes. I guess it doesn't matter too much if the movie sucks but it's nice to be interested in watching a second/third time because you pick up more when you have some idea of what the dialog is before it happens.

Music isn't so great because it's obviously not spoken and the language won't be quite as natural. The best experience I've had in that direction is song cycles by Schumann/Schubert but that's obviously not everyone's thing. Oh, and Rammstein. It's always fun to learn a word that I've heard them singing but never understood and think, 'woah, I didn't know that's what they were saying!'

Some movie suggestions would be great. They only native German that I've seen is Der Untergang (which is freaking awesome btw). Television shows would be good too, that way I can watch an episode a day. I've listened to a bit of Rammstein, but didn't care for it too much initially. I may give it another listen.

Hah, that's funny, I just watched Untergang last night :p Others that I have recently enjoyed: Run Lola Run, Goodbye Lenin, The Lives of Others, and The Legend of Rita. Nowhere in Africa wasn't so good. I've got a bunch more on my to-see list that I can share if you like. I get through about 1 a week. Also, I originally started working from this list of recommendations: http://www.vistawide.com/german/german_film.htm

Not quite in the same category, but this works for some daily listening practise: http://www.dw-world.de/dw/0,2142,8030,00.html

What level are you at? I've got the equivalent of maybe 3 university level courses but I can't follow a movie for shit without the subtitles.

I haven't seen many German films, but these were all good:

Das Boot
Wings of Desire & Far Away So Close
Run Lola Run
The Princess and the Warrior

I'm just at 101, but I intend to live in a dorm in the fall that is primarily German.
