Mushkin vs. Micron?

Don't know if I'm on the right forum or not, but I have a question re. which memory to buy. I have a budget system, 128 MB Mosel PC133 with Celery 300 OC'd to 450 on an ABIT BH6 mobo.

Anyway, today for $34 shipped I can buy either of the following two 128MB PC133 modules new:

Micron ECC CL=2 or

Mushkin BasicPC133 non-parity CL=333.

Which should I do?

 
Given your choices, the Micron would probably be better, but can't you get Micron non-ECC CL2? I prefer that instead.

Not for the same price. Micron non-ECC CL2 would cost $59.

Would I get the benefit of CL2 and/or ECC memory if it is coupled with my existing memory (which I believe is CL3 and non-ECC)?
 
I'd get the Micron. But why are you gettin ECC? Its kinda pointless especially considering the motherboard you have (your nto running a server or even a heavy workstation) and it'll only add cost and slow you down. And since Micron and Crucial memory are basicly the same, it should hit the same level of overclocking too if you need it too
 
For $34.19 you can get a stick of 128MB Crucial CL2, with free 2nd day shipping. You could get a little more off if you used the webpromo link, which I dont have right now.
 
Mushkin basic is total crap spot market cheapest supplier rubbish.
I would not buy Mushkin basic if you have the alternative of
purchasing ANY name brand memory...Expensive Mushkin is fine,
but their &quot;basic&quot; cheap memory is as bad or worse than any.

Kwad Guy - a year ago, I got 3 64Mb dimms to operate at 164Mhz for days on end, only rebooting because I installed new software/drivers, etc. That was budget mushkin memory Maybe I just got lucky?

i dont think u can mix ecc with nonecc ram.

Wow. Does anyone else have anything to say about Mushkin basic? I was kind of leaning towards Mushkin just because of the name and the reviews of their higher-end Rev 3 etc. stuff. Plus, the boards are black. 😉

Sounds like people prefer Crucial to Micron or Mushkin Basic, am I right?

I long for the day where all memory modules are treated equally, and NOT by the color of their boards... I'd go Micron ECC. There's no reason not to get it, if Non-ECC is the same price.
 
Mushkin basic should suck.
I bought a Mushkin budget pc100 2 years ago, disappointed for unknown brand chip.
Recently found out its spd is poorly written from ctspd - &quot;error&quot; for almost every item.
I'll never buy Mushkin ram again.

Today Mushkin basic is even more expensive than Crucial cl2,
how can you still consider Mushkin basic?
For $39, why don't you consider viking (infineon) 256M for $53 from amazon?
 
In the past few months, everyone I know who ordered Mushkin
&quot;basic&quot; (myself included) got rot &quot;PQ&quot; brand memory. This is
memory so bad, Mushkin doesn't even put their own name brand
stickers on it (they used to do that in the old days of somewhat
better quality &quot;basic&quot; memory).

I have NOTHING good to say about Muskin basic, and would emphatically
recommend you not buy it. It's not the cheapest and it's sure
as hell not any better than the cheapest junk on pricewatch.

Crucial is Micron, although others use micron other then crucial
 
I prefer infineon to crucial now - 0.17, smaller, cooler.
You can buy Viking pc133 cl3 (with same infineon chips as mushkin rev2, rev3) from amazon for $53 after coupon free shipping, sure can overclock to cl2, possible to 150 as mushkin rev3.

IMO, mushkin rev3 is hype, gimmick. Why pay so much extra for someone to pre-test it?
Why can't you test it by yourself? Let's say if you just can get 140 with Viking's, just overclock the whole system to 140 then, for the price of mushkin rev3 (128Mx2=$79x2=158), you can get 256Mx3 viking, your system overall performance will end up higher with more memory than more overclocking.
 
OK, I get the message on Mushkin basic. I'm so disillutioned. 😉

Sounds like I should go with Micron/Crucial. I'll also check out Viking. Are there any reviews of Viking vs. Crucial memory?
