Mushkin has a weekend special on their green line 512mb pc3200 sticks, $84 with free shipping. Use coupon code "ANAND" to get 10% off, for the final total of $75.60. Not a bad deal, considering the recent rise in memory prices.

Their basic stuff isn't very good for overclocking. It'll run at the rated frequency and timings, but you won't get much more out of it.

They've got some 512MB PC3200 Cas 2-2-2 in their bargain bin section for $119 still. I bought some of this, and it's great stuff.

Since this is budget memory they will use whatever memory they can get at the best price. Bottom line is that they'll use memory from different companies.

See this link. MS knows a lot about memory and used to work for the parent company of Mushkin (Ramtron I believe).

Did you just try the link or did you actually try copying and pasting the URL into your browser. For some unknow reason the link does not work. However, when I take the URL that was provided and paste it into my browser it does get me to the proper page. The link and the displayed URL are one in the same. Go figure??

thats because when you link something it already includes the HTTP/:. So when you click it, it has 2 http in front of the address.

That would explain it. Link has been fixed. Thanks!

Thanks for the info. I bought four of them for my refurb Dell 8300 (still waiting for) that techbargains listed last week. Obviously not expecting to overclock these. What sold me on Mushkin was the "try for 2 weeks, can return for any reason, no questions asked". Of course, I'd prefer heat sinks from prehaps a misguided opinion that they may make it a bit less susceptible to being zapped by ESD, but with a lifetime warranty, how can one go wrong?

Checking out the JmsAndrsn's link showed me this:

JmsAndrsn: I have the opportunity to get 1GB (2 x 512MB) of Mushkin PC3200 Basic Green at a price of about $150. Do you think there is any reason why this stuff would not run in a dual channel DDR system (no overclocking of course).

and this:

MS: There is no reason for any worries except that the basic green are spot market chips and it is a bit of a matter of luck how well they perform. Some are great, some others aren't.

I feel less confident by hearing "spot market chips", but Mushkin's tech support said since I would be buying 4 modules, that they'd be from the same "batch" and to let them know if there was any problems. Which leads me to a question - anybody with a recommendation for a good freebie/shareware program to run against these to ensure a certain level of performance against the standard installed memory which I will be removing? Mushkin also said that sometimes Dell using spd? to tweak their memory, but haven't a clue about this, how it's done, or why. TIA!

I'm pretty optimistic about two sticks working ok but getting four sticks to work might be a bit harder since adding on more sticks will normally reduce the top speed that the memory will run at. If you're only able to 2 sticks to work you may just want to sell the other 2....unless you actually need 2GB of memory.

Also, see this link. It may provide you with some assurance as well.

I got my 4 sticks today. Great stuff.
I've been runing 2 sticks in dual channel mode at DDR400 in the Dell 400SC server tht I also just go today.
Been running Memtest86 for well over an hour without any problems.

Yep, I need 2GB. If there were 1GB PC3200 DDR400 DIMMS at a good price, I'd get those for 4GB.

Here's an email to me from Mushkin - pretty nice to answer my questions - :

The basic green modules should be fine altho i have seen Dell tweaking their specs for memory using the spd program used on memory modules to be specific to their machine, thus purchase the ram thru Dell. i don't think this is a problem with the 8300, but let me know directly if there are any issues.
We package our Dual packs with exact match modules, ,you're right- because you're buying at the same time, they are all from the same lot - all good.

But, sadly, here's my latest post to Mushkin:

Got the Dell 8300 in on Wednesday and got the four DDR400 PC3200 modules yesterday. Pulled the originals and wrote down their configuration for my records:

RAM slots are numbered this way (from rear)
Slot 1,3,2,4

RAM, as installed from Dell, are two 128MB modules:

Channel A DIMM0 - Slot 1 (rear most slot)
MT4VDDT1664AG-40BC3 PC3200U-30330-C1
128mb, DDR, 400MHz, CL3

Channel B DIMM0 - Slot 2
MT4VDDT1664AG-40BC3 PC3200U-30330-C1
128mb, DDR, 400MHz, CL3

Installed the four Mushkin 512MB PC3200 Basic Green ~Weekend Specials~ today in slots 1,3,2,& 4, and unfortunately, they aren't working! :(

Couldn't even boot to a screen. The Dell immediately starts beeping away. Looking at the lights, it indicates, gosh!, a memory problem. Rats!

So, I pull the Mushkin modules, put one original module back in slot 1 to make sure all is ok, and it works fine. Power down, put the other original in slot 2 for the other channel, and boots up fine. Pull the original modules, and, with appropriate power downs, anti-stat band and all, alternate trying out one Mushkin DIMM at a time in slot 1 only, in case there is a bad DIMM. All individually, as the only DIMM in the case in slot 1, or all together, give the beeps, no bootup and no video.

So, now got to figure out next move besides an RMA from Mushkin!

Sorry to hear about your trouble. I have had a little better luck than you. In the Dell 400SC sever (I was thinking it might be the same motherboard as the 8300) I'm able to get a pair of the same modules working fine at DDR400 without errors in Memtest86. I tried all four modules and over the course of about 5 hours I got 28 errors. Not a problem in my case because I was just planning on using 1GB anyways.

Please see this link.

I don't know what to tell you other than maybe try the Mushkin as just a pair in case you have not already done so. Also, if you have any other DDR boards try testing each modules by itself and make sure that it works and also try to see how hight each module can go by itself.
