Murdered Soul Suspect

Anyone interested in this title? Reminds me of heavy rain it seems like from some videos on YouTube. I've been thinking about getting it just don't know what it would play like.

Yea I was thinking to try it on pc since I have watchdogs on ps4 to keep me busy. Wonder how much action there really is in it.

It looks like more of a movie type game. From what I read it's not very difficult so I may hold off and get it on sale too.

I want it. I am big on heavy Cinematic type games (and willing to accept QTE's if need be (looking at TR and TLoU)) for that feel of an interactive movie. Though the plot has to be damn good. Proportional to the amount of removal of interactivity, so I am big on TWD but down on stuff like Heavy rain. This looks to be in the more normal end of Cinimatic, you do stuff like normal for a good while then a cinematic scene happens. So probably somewhere in between TR and TLoU.

Though I am looking to get it on PC through Never Settle, but if I can't get Amazon to send me my card I'll pick it up a couple weeks from now for the One.

I remember when it was announced and I just didn't like it. It just didn't look interesting or look like it would have a feel / story I'd enjoy. I suppose I might wait for reviews or it to hit the bargain bin (or PS+ / Xbox Live deals) free list.

I usually like games with a good and intense story. But I also really enjoyed la noire and I'm not sure this game will be like that.

Ya I got it/will be getting it via the Never Settle free games. It looked pretty decent and figured I'd gamble on a upcoming new release vs some of their other $10 game options.

IGN's Murdered: Soul Suspect Review

The Verdict
There are some great concepts in Murdered: Soul Suspect, but they feel undercooked or underutilized, and the lack of demand for any real input from us makes Murdered feel like a pick-a-path game where there’s only one path. It scrapes by on the power of its central whodunnit mystery, but I can’t help but feel that Murdered: Soul Suspect is ten hours worth of unfinished business.

Score: 5.5 Mediocre
Murdered: Soul Suspect has a lot of great ideas, but none of them come together in a satisfying way.

+ Compelling central mystery
+ Genuinely frightening enemies

– Little to no challenge
– Uninteresting gameworld
– Weak characterization

Bummer! 🙁

I'll tell you how it is one I get my never settle key. But this makes me a little happy I recently got a new vid card because I probably would have had this on Xbone pre-order and been disappointed. Though it seems like the reviewer seemed to mark it down for a few non legitimate complaints, like Linear story line, which is exactly what you would expect from this type of game. Not every game should be a sandbox game.

Well other story driven games like heavy rain for example let you craft the story as you go along based on your actions.

Some do but not all. My point isn't that you can have a sandbox or adjustable world. But not having one shouldn't be a negative and having one shouldn't be a positive they are two types of story telling through games.

It's like a movie reviewer that just doesn't like Sci-Fi or Comedy doing a review for those types of movies. Their numbers mean nothing because they are comparing it to movies within their favorite genre and not against movies in that genre. Basically calling a movie crap because it's a comedy and not because its a crappy comedy.

The Kotaku review was pretty similar. But its being judge on what it could of been within its story and system for storytelling.

Well, they are pointing out what they see as a legitimate failing by the developer. I have no issue with that. Granted it shouldn't weigh on the score of the game but it is a totally legitimate complaint.

Well my never settle key came yesterday. Played about 2 hours of it. It's what I wanted/expected, I can see how some might not liking the pacing but I like it. Its a bit of a simple puzzle detective game with a better then normal story. Could be better but I like the fact that the protagonist is a guy that already went through his self reflection earlier in life so is a little bit more level headed about everything. But to a lot of people that could be a bit bland.

Also I get now why the review mentioning him seeing his body in the morgue wasn't handled well. Two issues, one it's the second time he sees his body and now he is gun-ho on crossing over, and second it's how information and realization is consumed in this game. The Reviewer was doing a disservice to himself/herself by not going into the clue system to see these prompts when they come up. Its not a codex system, its much more important than that.

That said its not a game for everyone. That's for certain. I am not saying it like a "if you like COD you won't like this" point of view. Besides the fact that I don't believe in this whole anti-"bro game" culture, its a very niche game. Even people who like cinematic games probably won't like this. It's pacing because its a detective game is slow, there isn't any action, the demon parts are mainly to add risk and slow the pacing even more. The Puzzles could be harder or more punishing and the Story could be better. But so far it's been pretty entertaining.

When Kotaku got all worked up over seeing Aiden Pierce (watchdog) with a gun hoping for a game that eschewed away from a protagonist using gun violence under the idea of game that found alternate challenges and tricks to solving issues. This should have been right up their ally, even the Demon violence, is pretty basic, seems to look like your pulling the original soul out of the demon form and therefore cleansing it.

So it seems I may like it or the story. Will still wait for a sale. It looks interesting since I do enjoy these types of games with a story to uncover in mind. Thanks for the quick review. It looks a little bit different.

I've always liked these type of games since playing fareinheit on the pc. Although this is a lot different.

From what you guys are saying, is it similar to point and click adventures, where gameplay isn't the focus so much as the immersion in the story?

Yeah it's a walk and click adventure that adds a more and more supernatural sources for info as you move on. This game is all about the story. But I feel a lot of gamers that brag or nag on how quickly they finished a game, won't like it. It looks like I will get about 10-13 hours out of it. But I am getting most of the side story stuff and I am looking through the clue collection materials and a lot of the story and character building happens in that interface. It's not a requirement to solve the investigations, but it really is a core component of game and something I think a lot of reviewers are passing over. I think the Kotaku review specifically mentioned by talking about the morgue scene how little the looked through it.
