Well my never settle key came yesterday. Played about 2 hours of it. It's what I wanted/expected, I can see how some might not liking the pacing but I like it. Its a bit of a simple puzzle detective game with a better then normal story. Could be better but I like the fact that the protagonist is a guy that already went through his self reflection earlier in life so is a little bit more level headed about everything. But to a lot of people that could be a bit bland.
Also I get now why the review mentioning him seeing his body in the morgue wasn't handled well. Two issues, one it's the second time he sees his body and now he is gun-ho on crossing over, and second it's how information and realization is consumed in this game. The Reviewer was doing a disservice to himself/herself by not going into the clue system to see these prompts when they come up. Its not a codex system, its much more important than that.
That said its not a game for everyone. That's for certain. I am not saying it like a "if you like COD you won't like this" point of view. Besides the fact that I don't believe in this whole anti-"bro game" culture, its a very niche game. Even people who like cinematic games probably won't like this. It's pacing because its a detective game is slow, there isn't any action, the demon parts are mainly to add risk and slow the pacing even more. The Puzzles could be harder or more punishing and the Story could be better. But so far it's been pretty entertaining.
When Kotaku got all worked up over seeing Aiden Pierce (watchdog) with a gun hoping for a game that eschewed away from a protagonist using gun violence under the idea of game that found alternate challenges and tricks to solving issues. This should have been right up their ally, even the Demon violence, is pretty basic, seems to look like your pulling the original soul out of the demon form and therefore cleansing it.
